Blackbox Foundation BlackBox Foundation is a nonprofit corporation in Casa Grande, Arizona approved by the Arizona Corporation Commission.

Creative performing arts have been an emerging development for several years in our rural community. Our mission is cultivate a sustainable and vital community theatre and creative arts scene. Our goal is to continue and improve the efforts most recently made by BlackBox Theatre by obtaining our 501c3 status which will allow funding through grants and local donors.

“Rural arts are different fro

m urban arts, but in unexpected ways. We often are predisposed to think that rural arts are smaller-scale
versions of arts activities in larger towns and cities, or that they are
not professional in a mainstream sense. But in fact rural arts have
a richness and complexity congruent with anything seen in larger
centres, and have distinct characteristics that arise precisely because
these activities happen in particular rural or community settings.”

— John Brotman, Ontario Arts Council, at a Canadian Cultural Observatory workshop

Blackbox Foundation Presents

ARSENIC AND OLD LACE

A Dark Comedy by Joseph KESSELRING, Directed by Pamela Karpelenia

WHEN: Monday, February 3, 2025, at 6:30 PM

WHERE: Blackbox Foundation
407 N Sacaton Street Casa Grande, AZ 85122

WHY: Because your neighbors already think you’re a little off—might as well lean into it! 🤣

ABOUT THE SHOW!
Murder has never been so... adorable. When Mortimer Brewster discovers that his sweet little old aunts have a secret hobby—poisoning lonely gentlemen and burying them in the cellar—his life spirals into chaos. Toss in a brother who thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt, another who’s basically Boris Karloff, and a fiancée who’s starting to wonder if all Brewsters are crazy, and you’ve got a night of laughter, absurdity, and just a few dead bodies.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Actors who can deliver laughs, charm, and a touch of lunacy. If you’ve ever been described as “quirky,” “dramatic,” or “theatrically insane,” we want to see you.

CHARACTERS 9M,3F

Mortimer Brewster: The family’s “normal” one. Thinks he has it all together until his aunts, brothers, and a cellar full of bodies prove otherwise.

Abby Brewster: A sweet, grandmotherly type... who just happens to believe murder is a public service.

Martha Brewster: Abby’s equally sweet and equally homicidal sister. They’re basically the Golden Girls... but with arsenic.

Teddy Brewster: Thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt. Loud, lovable, and perpetually on an imaginary safari.

Jonathan Brewster: Mortimer’s terrifying brother. He’s had bad plastic surgery and a worse attitude.

Dr. Einstein: Jonathan’s nervous, tipsy accomplice. Think “mad scientist,” but add comedy.

Elaine Harper: Mortimer’s fiancée. Witty, patient, and wondering if marrying into the Brewster family is worth it.

Officer O’Hara: A police officer with big dreams… of writing a Broadway play.

Lieutenant Rooney: The no-nonsense cop who finally sorts out this mess. (Or tries to.)

Mr. Gibbs: A lonely man who dodges a deadly cup of tea, but just barely.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Auditions you will need monologue, can't find one? We'll do cold readings from the script, as well.
