~EXPLORING DREAMSCAPES: A FINE ART PHOTO EXHIBIT~
August 7 to 31, 2024

I am honored to announce that three of my works—Desert Allure, Awakening, and Guardian of the Seastacks—will be featured in the juried photography exhibit at the Stephen Baumbach Gallery in Palm Springs. The theme, Altered State: Dreamscapes and Illusions, resonates deeply with my artistic vision, inviting us to explore the delicate boundary between reality and imagination.

A dreamscape, by definition, is a view or image that resembles something seen in a dream. It is a work of art that transports the viewer to a realm where the familiar is transformed into the extraordinary. Unlike an illusion, which seeks to deceive the eye, a photographic dreamscape invites the viewer to embrace the surreal and the fantastical while still grounding them in the essence of the natural world. It is this delicate balance that I strive to achieve in my work, creating images that are both otherworldly and deeply rooted in reality.

~CHASING WATERFALLS: A YOSEMITE IN SPRING PHOTO ADVENTURE~

As the high-country snow melts, Yosemite National Park transforms into a living masterpiece. The waterfalls and rivers, once frozen, burst into a symphony of life, painting some of the most awe-inspiring scenes in the world. At peak water flow, Yosemite’s Upper and Lower Falls unleash a thunderous roar reverberating throughout the Valley. Bridalveil Fall is a sight to behold, with sprays that ascend to half of its towering 620-foot height. And then there are the hidden gems, like Ribbon Falls, which grace us with their presence only during the spring if the conditions are just right – at a staggering 1,162 feet, it stands as one of the tallest waterfalls on the planet.

The Merced River was running high because of late-season snowfalls and heavy spring rains, and the waterfalls were packed this year. As an immersive experience, our recent Yosemite in Spring Photography Workshop was more than just a photography class – it was a soul-stirring journey through the heart of one of America’s most iconic national parks.

Memorial Day is dedicated to remembering and honoring military personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country. Its origins can be traced back to the Civil War when it was initially known as Decoration Day. This solemn observance was officially recognized as a national holiday by Congress in 1971, a testament to our enduring respect and gratitude for our fallen heroes.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, established on November 11, 1921, symbolizes national sacrifice. It serves as the final resting place for an unidentified American soldier who lost his life in World War I. In a poignant act of remembrance, the remains of unknown soldiers from later wars were also interred there in 1958 and 1984. This white marble tomb on a hill in Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C., is a solemn reminder of the countless lives given to defend our nation, a testament to the price of freedom.

As the early morning light bathes the scene, a Marine stands at attention, a sentinel of honor. Like a remembrance beacon, the sun's rays pierce through the monument, casting solemn shadows on the ground. The granite structure, a symbol of strength and vulnerability, stands tall. The powerful scene is a testament to the price of freedom and a deep admiration and gratitude for those who have served and sacrificed.

Mariposa Grove. Mariposa Grove is located in the southernmost part of Yosemite National Park. Here, you can witness the grandeur of giant sequoias—a living testimony to resilience and reverence. Imagine standing before a giant sequoia, its reddish-brown trunk reaching for the sky like a weathered sentinel. This grove holds secrets etched by centuries, including the footsteps of Native Americans, the awe of early explorers, and the wisdom of ancient trees.

Three Brothers. Just east of El Capitan in Yosemite Valley, there are three massive bare granite peaks known as the Three Brothers. They consist of Eagle Peak, the uppermost "brother", the Middle Brother, and the Lower Brother. According to John Muir, the view from the top of Eagle Peak is the most beautiful view of Yosemite Valley. The Three Brothers are one of the most famous sights within Yosemite National Park.

Yosemite Falls. Photographers from around the world visit Yosemite Falls to capture its beauty. Nature creates a stunning contrast with the lush green of spring trees framing the falls and the water connecting the heavens and the earth. The play of light at different times of day transforms the falls into a kaleidoscope of emotions, and every lens captures a different note. It’s a visual sonnet sung by generations of artists who seek communion with the sublime.

Valley View. Valley View offers a breathtaking view of Yosemite Valley, which I love. It is especially beautiful in the springtime when the waterfalls are at their fullest, and the foliage is lush and green. The Merced River flows in the foreground, adding to the scene’s beauty. The view highlights some of the valley’s most prominent features, including El Capitan, Sentinel Rock, Cathedral Rocks, and Bridalveil Falls. Although glaciers carved out Yosemite Valley over 14,000 years ago, the Merced River continues to shape it, making Yosemite a genuinely dynamic place.

El Capitan. El Capitan is the largest granite monolith in the world. Rising over 3,000 feet from the valley floor, its sheer cliffs challenge some of the most skilled rock climbers in the world.

The Pensive Side of Half Dome: Half Dome, with its sheer granite face and unique shape, has long been one of the most sought-after locations in Yosemite. Photographers comb the valley to find the perfect location to capture their view of Half Dome. I've always been partial to images captured at sunset and sunrise. Hikers worldwide take on the daunting challenge of Half Dome’s famous cables.

Half Dome During the Day. Half Dome stands as a testament to the preservation, resilience, and the human spirit’s yearning for the sublime. Capturing an image of Half Dome is akin to capturing a sunbeam, a tangible link to the whispers of ancient trees and the echoes of dreamers.

Tunnel View. This is the first location that most visitors encounter as they enter Yosemite Valley. For nearly 75 years, the historic Tunnel View overlook has been a cornerstone of Yosemite National Park’s landscape, drawing an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 visitors daily during peak tourist season. Tunnel View offers one of Yosemite Valley’s most renowned panoramas, featuring El Capitan and Bridalveil Fall with the backdrop of Half Dome.

Glacier Point. Many people don’t realize it, but you can capture four very unique perspectives of Half Dome from Glacier Point. Washburn Point offers a perfect side profile of Half Dome, and the original Glacier Point provides an epic view of the entire Yosemite Valley beneath you. My favorite vantage point is what I call “The Curve in the Road.”

~3 SEASONS OF YOSEMITE~ Few places are as beautiful and inspiring as Yosemite National Park in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains. ~ PASSION ~ My three passions in life have always been my teaching (Big 10 university & private college for 15 years), my outdoor hiking & backpacking adventures (in places like Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa, the Andes in South America, and the Canadian Rockies), and my landscape photography (25 years as an amateur and 15 years as a professional).
