Lumberyard’s history goes back to 1999 when, thanks to founder and benefactor Solange MacArthur, it began as American Dance Institute (ADI), a dance school based in Rockville, Maryland. In 2010, after looking closely at the challenges facing the American contemporary dance field, ADI changed course to focus on artist-centered programs that include residency and performance opportunities. This new

direction resulted in what is now Lumberyard’s stellar reputation for providing this much needed support, with the Incubator residency program, introduced in 2011, especially praised. Lumberyard also serves emerging artists through its Solange MacArthur Award and Future Artists Initiative. In summer 2016, Lumberyard responded to artists’ requests for residencies to culminate with a New York City performance season by launching Lumberyard/NYC, an initiative undertaken in collaboration with New York City theater spaces, which, to this day, not only supports artists but also serves audiences who, at affordable ticket prices, have the chance to see a wide range of contemporary dance.

THIS WEEKEND AT LUMBERYARD!
Art Like Love!
Friday, April 28-Saturday, April 29
Free admission
Art Like Love! is an 8-minute film by Pioneers Go East Collective. Inspired by radical avant-garde filmmaker Tom Rubnitz, the film borrows DIY and camp aesthetics to celebrate otherness. The project is a springboard to examine DIY video artists in the 80s and symbolized a refutation of commercial art at the time when Soho galleries were just beginning to commercialize. With the bold affirmation that “Art doesn’t have to be consumed”, Art Like Love! sets an optimistic tone, allowing us to reflect on the creative process, and artistic intervention.

Yes, it’s true. We are selling our property for all the reasons so well articulated in the New York Times article.

Lumberyard Center for Film & Performing Arts is a facility and an essential model built to support and protect the future of American artistic innovation. Five seasons of operation have established an affordable proof of concept for our industry.

Our space has been an integral part of the Hudson Valley since opening, proving that the arts can be an unparalleled catalyst for American small towns. We take great pride in what we have built and the immense economic growth and investment that our vision generated. We greatly look forward to passing the legacy on to future stewards of this incredible facility.

For more information on the sale, please reach out to Zach Redding at Colliers:

The American Dance Institute, which operates the center, said the pandemic and shifting priorities of donors had led it to rethink its mission.

NEW: movie and television productions continue to be drawn to and surrounding communities in the past two years because the COVID-19 pandemic has made filming in open spaces more appealing. More on the benefits of NY’s film tax credit: https://www.hudsonvalley360.com/opinion/editorials/as-good-as-it-gets/article_d5fa8f46-a789-5dd2-8105-64c110f90718.html

There are several reasons to tout film and television production as one of the leading industries in Greene and Columbia counties in 2022.

Lumberyard's Artistic & Executive Director Adrienne Willis tells The Daily Mail how the NYS film tax program from the Governor’s Office of Motion Picture & Television Development has been greatly beneficial to our work and our community in Greene County and Catskill, NY: “We’ve never had anybody use the space who hasn’t absolutely loved the space and the way that it’s been arranged and built. They also love Catskill and being in the community. ... Plus local restaurants will also cater meals for the shoots. They really like working with local law enforcement, too, compared to other places that they’ve been. When
they have to spread out to local hotels, they love the hospitality in the area. There’s just a really good feeling and a good vibe up here that I think they’re unaccustomed to in other areas.”

CATSKILL — A Catskill studio has been greatly bolstered by an influx of film and television productions thanks in part to a state tax incentive program.

Created by 2020 Drama Desk nominees and founders of Hideaway Circus, Stars Above is a new outdoor family-friendly circus show touring around the North East of the United States in August and September of 2021. Set to original music and reimagined cover songs, Stars Above is a fresh take on the nostalgic small touring circuses from two hundred years ago.

Featuring an all-star cast of circus performers and musicians, the show centers around a day in the life of a traveling family troupe. Combining elements of contemporary and classical circus, Stars Above explores the connections to our loved ones, community, and the things we have lost.

American Artistic innovation is in crisis! US-based artists universally and urgently need time to experiment with design and technology and moving work from studio to stage has become an insurmountable obstacle. Technical rehearsals are the most expensive part of the creation process.

To protect and ensure access to design and technical experimentation time as a vital component of American artistic innovation, we are establishing the American Artistic Innovation Fund. The Fund will expand access for artists at all levels of their careers and also support American presenting institutions, large and small.

2020: We still need to raise $550K for another summer of technical rehearsals (we're already half way there thanks to so many supporters and donors!)

2021 and beyond: An annual goal of $2.5M. At scale, this will support 30 technical rehearsals each year, making it a true high-impact, low-cost solution that our field desperately needs.

Very simply, the Fund is for the future of American artistic innovation. You can donate at https://www.lumberyard.org/fund/
