Such an honor and privilege to photograph Dr. Anthony Fauci recently for Global Camps Africa, who was receiving an award from GCA for his work in combating the AIDS crisis in Africa.

I had about 10 minutes to photograph Dr. Fauci on the rooftop terrace of the International Spy Museum with the GCA Board of Directors group, plus several more individual groupings, including Global Camps Africa founder and board president, Phil Lilienthal.

Presenting the award on behalf of Global Camps Africa was Lawrence O'Donnell, who anchors "The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell," which airs weekdays at 10pm on MSNBC.

Cutting my teeth over 20 years ago as a wedding photojournalist, it was so personally important to me to offer a photo not on the shot list -- "Dr. and Mrs. Fauci," together. Note: Christine Grady is an accomplished bioethicist at NIH. I love reading the pride and joy on Dr. Fauci's face in this image of he and his wife. I'm confident she has been his rock for well over half his life. I will never stop being fascinated by couples in all stages of love and marriage.

These photos were particularly challenging because of the constantly encroaching setting sun and the location of the Washington Monument, which I very much wanted in the background. I was so pleasantly surprised when I got the images into post-production and the resulting light and shadows from the exquisitely designed terrace created a totally unexpected graphic element. The rooftop terrace at the Spy Museum was designed by Hickok Cole Architects.

It all moved very quickly. It's the kind of "rush and reward" that makes me pinch myself that I GET to do this work. I GET to do this! Many heartfelt thanks go to Event Accomplished for selecting me for this job.

The sun has been peeking out more and more lately, and spring is right around the corner! To celebrate, I'm offering an early-March promotion for Family Photography!

Folks who book me for a family photography session NOW through March 15th, will receive $100 OFF the session fee (normally $650 for up to four family members). Folks who sign up must schedule and have their session before May 1st. All sessions include 45-60 minutes, all edited high-resolution images, which are downloadable from a private website.

Moments when I count myself lucky...

A wonderful client of mine snapped a behind the scenes photo of me during our recent family photo shoot.

I photographed their wedding, and they have me back every year for family photos now that they have a little girl.

As I'm booking another Fall Family Photography Session with a former bride, her angst about how to wrangle kids in the photos is sooooo palpable... I hear ya, sister!!

Last weekend was chock full of family photo shoots, and during one session photographing a large multigenerational family, one of my younger clients was not having it.

I employed my empathy superpower to problem solve... "WHY is he not cooperating, what does he need??" Ohhhh... he is BORED! So I took him out of the photo and brought him back with me and let him sit in the driver's seat for a moment.

This really stirred things up in a good way for everybody! After this moment, the young man was more than happy to step back into the shot to be part of the magic. Without a doubt, his boredom was quenched. Bucket. Filled.

High-five to this kid who is the one who ultimately stepped it up and made it work -- good job, buddy!! Kudos to everyone else in the family who all kept their cool!

And very special thanks to my client (his mom) took this fun photo of me in action. 🥰

Rustic-style venues in the heart of Old Town Alexandria don't get much better than Virtue Feed & Grain.
I don't always love the look of off-camera flash for intimate events, so having twinkling lights throughout is a game changer in a barn-like setting with lots of dark wood that absorbs light. Not only that, but did you see that skylight? I regularly shoot in low light, and that right there is plenty for me to sneak up on folks and capture special candid moments.

First dance as husband and wife. There are so many truly beautiful photos from this wedding - my couple did such an amazing job with their event! But I will always say: you can have your wedding one of a million different ways… the most important thing is that you’ll be walking away with your spouse and your photos. Of the hundreds of images I delivered my couple, I can’t get past the emotion in this one, and I think it deserves its own post. To love and be loved… that is the meaning of life. Of this, I am certain.
