On this day in 1999, I presented a Gibson Guitar to Scotty Moore at Air Studios.⁣
⁣
Scotty Moore had been a major inspiration in my early transitory days from acoustic to electric guitar. His character guitar playing on those early Elvis Sun recordings, and later at RCA, was monumental. It was during the '50s that these types of song-shaping guitar parts helped me see the importance of the electric guitar approach to the music.

The first record player my family had was a wind-up one that played 78s. It had doors on the front that you opened to turn the volume up and closed to turn the volume down. That was really archaic. And all the good records were coming out on 45, so I thought, right, it’s going to have to go.

Eventually I got my own vinyl record player. Then the job of trying to learn from records began in earnest: I was trying to find the musical glue of the records. Listening to what the guitarists were doing and then seeing if I could play it.

I listened to The Sun Sessions and tried to work out what Elvis was playing on those rhythm guitar parts and what Scotty Moore was playing on those electric parts, the vocal effects and guitar effects. I would think, how could I possibly play what Scotty Moore was playing? But then I would start to work it out, and come up with a version of it. That was all done through listening to records.

I believe everybody else was doing the same around this period, but we all came out of the tunnel reaching different conclusions.

July 5th 1980...George Jones' classic track, "He Stopped Loving Her Today" was at #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles charts. The melancholy song, written by Bobby Braddock and Curly Putman has been named in several surveys as the greatest country song of all time.🎢

50 years ago today, Bad Company released their eponymous debut album. After signing with Led Zeppelin's new record label (Swan Song) in 1973, Paul Rodgers wanted the band to record their first album at Headley Grange (the English estate where Zeppelin recorded their monumental 4th album a few years earlier). The positive mojo must have worked, because the album hit #1 on the Billboard Charts and went on to sell over 5 million copies in the US alone. With hits like Can't Get Enough, Rock Steady, Ready For Love, and Bad Company, it's no wonder that critics widely consider this to be one of the greatest rock albums ever recorded. 🀘

The Black Crowes released their second studio album The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion.
It was the first album by the band to feature Marc Ford on lead guitar, replacing Jeff Cease, who was fired the year before, and the first to feature keyboardist Eddie Harsch. The album's name derives from the full name of the Southern Harmony, an influential 1835 hymnal compiled by William Walker. It was a record for an album to feature four album rock number-one hits (previously set by Tom Petty in 1989, with three). The album itself reached the top spot of the Billboard 200 album chart, propelled by the success of these singles. In 2005, The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion was ranked number 477 in Rock Hard magazine's book The 500 Greatest Rock & Metal Albums of All Time. In 2006, the album was ranked number 100 on Guitar World magazine's list of the greatest 100 guitar albums of all time.
