I have never and will never officiate a wedding ceremony on a plantation. When I moved to North Carolina three years ago I truly was horrified to learn that plantations were wedding venues. I had no idea that there was a movement to decrease the influence of plantations on wedding sites. While I hate for these businesses to lose money, that’s the least that can happen given the blood that was shed on the land.

Four major companies used for wedding planning are revising content that promotes former slave plantations as venues

It may seem like a good idea at the time, and you get what you pay for has been my experience. A professional officiant is someone who has been seminary trained. Not Internet ordained. I don’t think a couple would hire a friend as a caterer just because they like to cook at home. Same with an officiant. Go for the professional.

These couples had to deal with now shows and puking officiants when they had their friends officiate their wedding

I thought I’d do a wedding for a change. Please congratulate Emily and Brian.

Nothing is inconsequential. Every grain of sand holds amazing secrets.
Each event contains mysterious messages. Every encounter with another
being is a point of contact upon which the universe pivots. . . . From
this perspective, we come to the realization that every piece is
integral in the unfolding of creation, including us."

So, what are your feelings about destination weddings?

Yes, it's your 'big' day. But it's our money and vacation time.

What do you think about this? I did have a couple who were not Jewish who asked to break a glass at the end of their ceremony to symbolize the end of LGBTQ discrimination. Couples use the pagan handfasting ceremony all the time. How would it be if a white couple jumped the broom? What are your thoughts?

Our wedding rituals, while beautiful, aren’t about photo ops and guest reactions.

May God make you holy when you feel numb and immobile,
paralyzed by fear or anxiety, anesthetized by compulsion or trauma.
May God lift you up and out of your dead places with loving arms
and breathe into you hope and life beyond measure.
Held by the hand of God, may you see your life in a new way
and with new possibilities—
with the eyes of the Creator who sees the whole of you
and loves it unconditionally.
May the God of Vitality bless you.
Amen.
