A couple weeks ago, I shared a photo of the dahlias that caught me by surprise by blooming just in time for a bridal bouquet.
My very local- and sustainably-minded couple wanted their downtown wedding to feature blooms grown as close to their beloved Charleston as possible. I’m not one to sacrifice aesthetics for anything, and so I was equally committed to using as many of our own flowers as possible while still giving her something gorgeous to carry down the aisle.
How do you best strike a balance between sustainability and looks?
1. Be as flexible as possible. The more you specify (ie. “I MUST have peonies!” Or “I need a very pale pink.”), the harder it becomes to design a floral arrangement.
2. Brush up on what’s in season where you live. If there is a specific out-of-season bloom you really want, ask if it’s possible to order it in, and if so, where it’s coming from. Sure, you can get peonies out of the US season, but… do you want them that badly?
3. Find a designer you trust enough to give him/her free reign on selecting stems. These dahlias were ready literal days from the wedding. Knowing my couple trusts me to select the most beautiful flowers that coordinate with a general style and palette gives me the ability to create the most beautiful arrangements. Even if it means deviating from the plan at the last minute, a skilled designer is best equipped to fulfill your vision while balancing your ethical ideals.
4. Less a tip and more of a reassurance: I treat this decision much like eating. YOU are the only one who can determine what’s most important to you in terms of ethics, health, taste, aesthetics, etc. For everyone, there is a balance, and it’s going to vary from couple to couple. Whatever your balance is, I’m here for it. 🙏🏻
