Very little is exactly known about how the Christmas holiday was spent in Charleston during the early 1800s. The new Republic in America, also often called the Federal period in architecture, was not the same as the later antebellum period. By the mid-1800s, much had changed in Charleston and in America at large, and many of the Christmas traditions we know and love come from the 1850s or later. In fact, it was after Prince Albert’s marriage to Queen Victoria in 1840 that we see a sort of reinvention of Christmas throughout the UK and eventually across the world.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
People in 1808, 1810, 1815 were not celebrating the same way that the Victorians would later on; Father Christmas and Santa Claus are nowhere to be found, and Christmas Trees have not yet reached America. So how did early Charlestonians celebrate the holidays? As we countdown to the 25th, we'll explore the holidays from the viewpoint of the Russells, the enslaved, and other early Charlestonians in the early 18th century.

Many of our children are just tired and anxious. Remember they have had a rough couple of years too. Santa has had many request from children just asking for peace, family time and everyone to be happy. Many are saying they don’t need anything but want happy memories with their family. If this is all they are asking, please do everything possible to make it come true. Make this Christmas special. ❤️
