1845, the house takes its name from some of the most prominent citizens of Charleston at the time of our country’s independence: the Rutledge family. Edward Rutledge, the eldest son of Irish immigrant Dr. John Rutledge, established one of the first successful law practices in Charleston in the mid-1700’s. He rose to prominence after freeing newspaper editor Thomas Powell, who was imprisoned for publishing critical articles of British rule. This acclaim led to him being named to the First Continental Congress and, at 26, was the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence. By December 1776, the rest of the Rutledge family held many prominent positions in the lowcountry. John was the first governor of South Carolina, Edward’s brother Hugh was speaker of the Legislative Council, and brother Thomas sat in Charleston’s General Assembly. Featuring original heart pine floors with floor-to-ceiling windows, the 5500 square foot venue can accommodate 125 t0 175 guests for a cocktail reception or a seated dinner or ceremony.
