Hugo has successfully gotten through the first stage of the immunosuppressive therapy without any adverse reactions. His remaining immune system has been brought down entirely, the idea behind which is to prevent it from attacking his bone marrow stem cells. Now begins the wait to see if this therapy will allow his bone marrow to begin producing blood cells again. This period could take several months, during which he will be highly susceptible to all sources of infection.

Unfortunately, one of those sources is fungal. Last night Hugo was sent to the OR for a biopsy on a lesion that had appeared on his right cheek, The end result was the removal of a roughly two-inch circle of skin from his face that had become infected with a form of fungus. He is now under observation to ensure that all of the infected tissue was removed before preparations for reconstructive surgery can begin.

We still have some road ahead of us before we can leave the hospital and come home, but this strong little dude will carry us all through.
