Video of the memorial dedication for William Jennings "Billy" Cox, known as "The Dixie Songbird." A brief overview of Mr. Cox's impressive musical career was followed by musicians performing two of his songs "Franklin Roosevelt's Back Again," first recorded in 1936, and "Sparkling Brown Eyes."

Thank you to Hank Edenborn, George Hausser, Matt Thomas, Michael Lipton of the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame, and Phil Melick.

A very special day, and we were privileged to be a small part of it.

On a cold and windy morning, several people from the music community here in Charleston, WV assembled at the Spring Hill Cemetery to honor the memory of William Jennings "Billy" Cox. A legendary West Virginia songster, Mr. Cox recorded 150+ songs beginning in 1929 before passing away in 1968. He unfortunately died in poverty and without a headstone honoring the man known as "The Dixie Songbird," until this week when the generosity of folks in the community raised the funds to make this happen. After a few brief remarks at the grave, some of Mr. Cox's music was performed on site to honor his memory and musical contributions. Thanks to Mt. Zion Memorial Fund and Phil Melick over at Elk City Records for letting us know this was happening so that we could pay our respects.

Howdy Folks,

Legendary songster and West Virginia native William Jennings "Billy" Cox will be honored with a memorial stone at Spring Hill Cemetery in Charleston, WV tomorrow morning.

On December 7, 2024, Hank Edenborn and other music enthusiasts will dedicate the headstone of William Jennings "Billy" Cox (August 4, 1897 - December 10, 1968) in Spring Hill Cemetery, Charleston, Kanawha County, West Virginia. One of West Virginia's best songwriters during the 1930s, Cox learned to play guitar and harmonica growing up in Charleston, and he started performing on radio as early as 1928. He recorded for Gennett Records from 1929 to 1931, and he recorded for the American Record Corporation, which later became Columbia, from 1933 to 1940.

In total, Cox made more than 150 recordings. Beginning in 1936, Cedar Grove native Cliff Hobbs sang harmony on Cox's records, providing a popular country duet sound. "Sparkling Brown Eyes" and "Filipino Baby" were his most popular records, both of which became country music standards.

Music historian Ivan Tribe met Cox in the mid-1960s, and you can read more about his research on West Virginia's recording artists in his 1984 book "Mountaineer Jamboree: Country Music in West Virginia," which was published by the University Press of Kentucky. Tribe also wrote several articles for academic journals and proved "a font of country music knowledge," prior to his passing last year.
