Meet the Artist | Anthony Burks Sr.

Mid-Career Artist | Mr. Anthony Burks Sr. is a master at creating life-like form in his paintings by using various media including charcoal, pens and ink, pastels, watercolor, and colored pencil.

His use of color juxtaposed against stark white backgrounds to create a three-dimensional feel is a rare quality seen in very few artist’s work. I dare to say that the iconic artist, the late great Charles White would be delighted with his works of Art.

View works by Anthony Burks Sr. at the Uptown Brooklyn Gallery Wednesday through Saturday from 11am-6pm.

Meet the Artist | Kevin Nance West

Emerging Artist | Kevin is a contemporary abstract and portrait painter. Kevin is a cancer survivor who has used this obstacle to fuel his passion for life and his craft as a fine artist. Kevin‘s current work is filled with colorful lines that create emotion in the viewer of the works. Many of these current works focus on children, being children, enjoying life as they dream about their future, without limits being placed on them by the world’s view of them.

Meet the Artist | Ametria Stamps

Emerging Artist | Mrs. Ametria Stamps is an artist truly, guided and inspired by God, the creator of the universe to paint in an abstract form. Her works of art are created using acrylic, oil, cloth, and many other media. When asked to explain her creative process, Ametria is consistent in her response, “It’s really unexplainable, God is the author and finisher of my artwork. When He moves me to begin a work of Art, I start immediately. When He says the work is finished, I stop because the painting is complete.”

View works by Ametria Stamps at the Uptown Brooklyn Gallery Wednesday through Saturday from 11am-6pm.

Meet the Artist | Najee Dorsey

Mid-Career Artist | Najee is a contemporary American visual artist known for using mixed-media, collage, various paints, and photographic works that depict southern African American life among other important subject matter. Najee is truly cut from the same cloth as Bearden, Denmark, and Jacob Lawrence, as he uses his unique style to tell stories about American life primarily in the Mississippi Delta and the Deep South. One of Najee’s favorite subject matter to create work about is the history of the Delta Blues.

Meet the Artist | James Denmark

Book End | Mr. Denmark was born into a family of artists. This family foundation exposed James to various disciplines in art that gave him a solid base. His grandmother was a master at using color and form in her quilts and wire sculpture. His grandfather was a noted bricklayer with unique designs and molds that were recognized in his community as his very own mark. His mother was gifted with an intuitive, feel for unique designs and patterns. This family foundation of creativity was the root that James Denmark grew, and blossomed from.

Join us as we bid fair well this week to our current exhibition: re [ ]

renew, resolve, reignite

re [ ]: the beginning of an action verb indicating repetition or restoration. re [ ] is a preposition in use since at least the 18th century, meaning “in the matter of, with reference to.” In today’s digital world, Re: is most often seen with a colon in the subject line of an email abbreviating a response or reply, implying the continuation of a conversation.

Take your final look this Friday at 6:00pm

Who is Tim Okamura?
Born in Edmonton, Canada, Tim Okamura began his artistic journey at the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary, where he earned his B.F.A. with Distinction. He further honed his skills at the School of Visual Arts in New York, graduating with an M.F.A. in Illustration as Visual Journalism in 1993.

Okamura is an internationally acclaimed artist celebrated for his unique style that combines traditional oil painting techniques with mixed media and elements of abstraction filtered through a contemporary urban perspective. His work focuses on themes of identity, resilience, representation, and community, and has been exhibited around the globe, earning a place in numerous museums and prestigious private collections.

"In my work, I explore different aspects of identity, culture, the urban environment, and abstract painting. As an artist, I am drawn to the human experience in all its diversity and richness, a fascination that is reflected in my portraits. Rooted in my bi-cultural experience of being raised in Canada with a prominent Japanese heritage combined with decades of living in New York, my approach is an amalgamation of the traditional and the contemporary, the East and the West, the physical and the spiritual."

"The recurring themes in my work – identity, resilience, community – are explored through a lens of compassion and empathy, encouraging the viewer to question their own perceptions, and to engage in broader conversations about diversity and inclusion. In this ongoing quest for connection and understanding, I believe that art has the power to bridge cultural gaps and challenge stereotypes."

"I love the idea of seeing something familiar in a new way."

Who is Herb Williams?
Herb Williams was born in Montgomery, AL, in 1973. Mr. Williams received a BFA in sculpture from Birmingham-Southern College. Upon graduation the artist immediately went to work at a bronze foundry in West Palm Beach, FL. There he cast hundreds of sculptures with the atelier Popliteo and the last work of art by photo realist Duane Hanson, “Man on Riding Lawnmower.” Herb Williams then moved to Nashville, TN, where he has lived and created art since 1998.

Herb states, "Crayons are a gateway drug." To most adults, the sight and smell of crayons produce specific memories of childhood. The twist in the road to nostalgia is the creation of a new object, from a medium in which it was not intended. This element of unexpected interaction and play consumes him.

The Fluxus movement in pursuit of appealing to senses other than the visual is what led to the curve of Herb's designs. Because he is in pursuit of larger ideas, the playful aspect of the medium is integral to the works of art he creates.

Herb has found himself interested in identifying iconic objects that society perceives to fit one role and then reintroducing them in different subtexts. Intriguing questions arise when an object associated with childhood, such as a crayon, is used to address issues dealing with more adult matters, such as sexuality, religion, or social hierarchy. The sculptures are childlike in their curious approach to the object as an icon, but beguiling and satisfying to him in the use of pure color as form. Larger room installations also add the element of playing to the olfactory sense, as the scent of the wax completely saturates the environment. Herb's intent is to continue to "seriously create art that looks at itself seriously".

Who is Jahnai Easter?
As an intuitive painter based in Charlotte, NC, Jahnai Easter has always found solace in creating Art. From a young age, she has explored various mediums and techniques, but it wasn't until her freshman year of High School when she discovered her true passion: Painting On Canvas.

For Jahnai, art is a means of expression, a way to channel her experiences and emotions onto the canvas. Her work is a reflection of who she is and the experiences she has had. Each stroke of the brush is a deliberate choice, a representation of her innermost thoughts and feelings.

Through her Art, Jahnai seeks to connect with her audience on an emotional level and invites them to share in her experiences. Her paintings are a visual representation of the beauty and complexity of life, capturing the essence of human emotion in every stroke.

re[new]
I selected "renew" because it aptly captures the central theme of my body of work for this exhibition. The art focuses on the resilience and transformation of Charlotte's Brooklyn community, which has faced various challenges over the years, including urban renewal. "Renew" signifies the process of revitalization, rebirth, and growth that is evident in the artwork as I intentionally weave together the community's past, present, and future. It reflects the essence of my message, highlighting the enduring spirit of Brooklyn Charlotte and its ability to thrive despite adversity.

Who is Gordon Holliday?
Gordon Holliday is a multi-disciplinary sustainable artist with a focus on regenerative systems. He was born in Columbia, Maryland, and is based in Charlotte, NC. Gordon’s curiosity for Fine Arts began in 2013 when he started his sophomore year at The University of North Carolina Greensboro. It was there he began to develop in life drawing, narrative topics, and explored his conceptual imagination.

After college Holliday moved to Charlotte, NC, and participated in the Slow Factory x Waste Management Design Challenge. His work continued as he developed a focus on sustainability. Gordon began to up-cycle clothing utilizing donated fabric/materials, remnant scraps, previously owned items, or thrift-ed clothing into new garments. RENEW REWORK ROOLE began the initiative he created that documents how reconstructed garments reach their final form through up-cycling.

In recognition of manufacturers who use chemical waste that is polluted, dumped, or misused in our ecosystem. The mission is to learn practical manufacturing and consumption in ethical ways for the environment. His initiative is to solve problems with the garment life cycle and offer regenerative clothing options. During 2021-2022 his work has been recognized by Forbes, Spectrum News, PBS Charlotte, Waste Management’s 2022 Sustainability Forum, and The C.F.D.A (Council of Fashion Designers of America). He continues to use remnant textiles and fibers to construct sustainable garments that tell stories about culture, history, and identity in the fashion industry.
