Time + Growth: A 10-Year Throwback

I came across a picture on Facebook from 10 years ago today!

And wow...

What a memory.

It was just Filipe and me back then. We were responsible for everything. This was before we had a store when we were online only. A lot of our shoots took place wherever we could set up around Charlotte. Also, a shoutout to Max Zalaquett for being our model for the day!

I have this weirdly vivid memory for moments like these. It’s a skill that comes in handy when running a clothing company, working with individual clients, and remembering all the things they have ordered over the years. I remember the day of this shoot so clearly. The setup in NODA, the vibe, and even snapping this exact picture. Back in my photography days, I was always a sucker for train tracks. Family photos, engagements...if there was a track nearby, we were there 😂.

At the time, I thought the shots from this day were phenomenal. We used them everywhere: ads, our website, socials...all the things. But the funny thing about time and perspective is how growth sneaks up on you, little by little. Looking back at these photos 10 years later, I can’t help but laugh. The lighting? Questionable. The tech? My DSLR then doesn’t even hold a candle to today’s phones. They would be unusable today 🤦‍♂️

And yet, these photos are a testament to how far we’ve come. Growth isn’t always flashy or fast. It’s incremental, slow, and steady. It’s the daily work, the constant improvement, and the belief that we’ll get better with every step. I rarely break out my camera these days, but I am so proud of our photoshoots in 2025. does an incredible job!

Thank you, Facebook Memories, for reminding me how it started and how much can change in a decade. Here’s to the journey and all the lessons along the way folks 🙌

// OVERDELIVER // We are obsessed with over-delivering on value and being the best at what we do.

But...it took us a long time to put it all together.

We used to lead our appointments with how great our suits are (and they ARE). But time after time, the customer's decision to use OMJ came down to the experience they had (The quality mattered, but not as much). Turns out...the more value and expertise we provided...the more our business grew.

Below are a few things that helped us become great in the custom wedding segment:

1. It Starts with Understanding

Knowing the client's needs and goals is key. It's the very first thing we do with each client...Listen, so we can advise on all things.

2. Every Detail Counts

With weddings, every little thing matters. From the venue to the season, customization enhances the experience even more, and the smallest detail could make the biggest difference (wedding date on the inside, buttonhole thread colors to match the flowers, a special relative's name who passed stitched inside the suit, etc...)

3. Consultative Service Is King

Clients expect more than just products. Any big box store will give them that. They want thoughtful advice that aligns with their style...a partner, not a vendor.

4. Relationships Matter

Building strong relationships is crucial. We pride ourselves on having great relationships with our fellow wedding vendors (venues, photographers, planners, florists, etc...). This makes us so much better at what we do.

In talking with a couple recently, they mentioned that no other custom-suit brand does these things. I was humble about it but then laughed and said.. you are probably right, I doubt any other brand is going to look at your wedding photographer's Instagram and help you decide on the best color based on how that photographer edits their pictures" 🤣.

And that, folks, is why we love what we do!

This past week, we received several heartwarming gift card requests, so I thought I would share some here. As a reminder, they make a great last-minute gift, and there is still time to get a physical card in the mail!

- A customer bought a custom shirt experience for their son, who is graduating in December. This will be the first custom shirt experience he has ever had!

- A customer is getting married next year, so buying a Custom Suit Experience with the discount will allow them to level up to a fabric they have always wanted.

- A father and son are getting custom shirt experiences so that they can both come in at the same time and enjoy doing something together!

A good friend bought a gift card for no clear reason. He just wanted to support us as a small business and knows it will force him to come in now.

- A wife is getting her hard-working husband a custom-suiting experience because she knows he would never spend that on himself. The gift card just says "Custom Suit", so he will never see how much it is and can fully enjoy the experience without thinking about the distraction of the monetary value.

We are a low-volume, higher-price business...which means reviews hold even more power than your typical higher-volume business. Every single day a customer mentions a deciding factor for choosing OMJ was our 180+ 5-star reviews 😁

// LORO PIANA // One of our favorite fabric mills we work with is . It is truly the next level and something we have expanded on this year from a fabric offering. Loro Piana isn't just a fabric, it's a luxury item like a Patek Philippe watch, and until you put it on and live in it for a day, it is almost impossible to describe the confidence and feeling it gives. It isn't for everyone, but it is a nice thing to put on the wish list that is universally recognized as one of the top fabrics in the world. Not every brand can carry it, so we are so thankful to be one of the top brands lucky enough to offer it!

// PICKUP IN STYLE // For us, the pinnacle of the OMJ custom suiting experience is the final pickup. It signifies that we’ve hit the mark. Seeing our “OMJ” garment bag leave our store and head down Nebel’s Alley is incredibly gratifying and never gets old. It’s just a short 50-yard stretch from our shop to the street, but the confidence and purpose our customers exude as they walk away is truly special. We’ve witnessed countless double takes, compliments, and even strangers stopping our customers to admire their suit (if wearing) or the garment bag (Where did you get that?). It’s amazing what a well-crafted suit and an exceptional customer experience can achieve.
