We are honored once again to play a big role in the Virginia State Parks Adventure Series in 2026. This will be year 7 or 8 for our involvement. Night Train was our first race to be a part of it. Next year, 4 events will be part of it.

Dogwood Ultra Marathons 10 Miler
James River Trail Runs 50k (Bonus points race)
Night Train Ultras Half Marathon
Pawpaw Festival 10 Miler

The concept is simple. Gain as many points as you can across a specific number of races. Although we are partial to trails and ultras, there are other events that incorporate adventure racing, kayaking and biking.

Go on ahead and get registered and set a goal to get into as many parks as possible in 2026!

Gluten Free

Last year after Freight Train, we committed to having gluten free options available for runners at our events. Right now we have at least 12 runners for Freight Train who have selected Gluten Free as an option. This awesome!

We will have gluten free Oreos and bread at each aid station. However, runners need to ask for it. The bread can be used for PB&J, quesadillas etc. If I put this stuff out, it will get snatched up by regular runners. So just ask a volunteer for gluten free selections. Many of our candies and broth will also be gluten free. As will the rice beans and chicken at the finish line.

We are slowly plugging our volunteer needs for Freight Train. Right now my two biggest needs at Saturday morning. I need the following:

Rice Aid Station (mile 8.4)- 8am-12pm. This is the busiest point on the course in the morning. I need two more volunteers

Start/Finish Line- 6am-10am. These volunteers help check everyone in, load up supplies for other aid stations and begin cooking. I need at least 2 more volunteers

Tuggle- (mile 22 or 36). 10:30am-2:30pm. This gets busy when 50k runners pass through around 11:30. I need one more volunteer here

No need to be blue for the holidays. You can still get this sweet Royal Blue hoodie if you sign up for Freight Train.

We also ordered another round of logo shirts with the slogan on the back. Believe it or not, this has become our most popular item. Folks really identify with our slogan. It’s not about speed put on the trails. It’s about determination and perseverance.

The logo shirts will be for sale at Freight Train. I do expect them to go fast.

Forest hit 45 miles at Band of Runners Camp. He completed a 50k at Piedmont. The last 2 years, he has hit 100k at Dogwood. Like all runners, he needs a goal. He is going to hibernate for a month or so and then get training. His goal is to successfully complete 100 miles at Dogwood in 2026. He will be there. Band of Runners will be there. Will you?

Freight Train always features a number of little competitions with the race to make things fun. The first is our traditional Ugly Christmas Sweater/Christmas Spirit competition. Break out your most hideous outfits or Christmas apparel for the day. We hand out prizes throughout the day.

So dust off those ugly sweaters and get creative!

Freight Train is just over 3 weeks away. I still have some volunteer vacancies that need filled. All volunteers giving at least 4 hours receive a free event equivalent to a 12 hour or shorter event. Volunteers giving at least 6 hours or a closing shift receive a free admission to any event.

Should I pick the “hiker” option or the regular option?

This is a question I get often. The truth is that most ultra runners turn into hikers during a race. But the concept of “running” an entire ultra or race is very intimidating for many trail users. For my purposes, there is no difference between the two categories. The hiker category is made to ensure users of all speeds feel welcome on a course.

We offer at least 1 “hiker option for every event we do. The 50k and Half at Freight Train are both hikable with long time limits.

Happy Veterans Day!

Quick Trail Talk Tuesday. Thanks for all those who served, including families who supported their service members! I spent the weekend at Band of Runners camp along with folks from Wear Blue and Team RWB. Thanks to all the organizations that continue to help us.

Forest made a successful return to Band of Runners Camp this weekend. I believe he eclipsed his total from last year. He was able to log 45 miles with campers. That means another $450 back to Band of Runners.

We had a sizable number of Virginia and North Carolina campers. Many discovered camp through word of mouth or from one of our events.

I am excited to announce that Dogwood will be the East Coast Band of Runners race this year. You will get to meet a lot of the campers who will be running and volunteering. You will also get a chance to ask questions from coaches and previous staff.
