Despite being the best there is, after Night Train, Ricky Bobby let me know he could use some help at the turnarounds for Freight Train.

I have some ideas, but which famous figure would you like to see manning our turnarounds?

I haven’t been able to run much lately. Trying to rehab a neck and lower back injury has been a slow going process.

But, over the last week, I have been at a teacher workshop in Philadelphia on the development of Western Civilization.

One of the lecturers on the Enlightenment was a man named Joseph Loconte. He has written a tremendous book on the friendship between C.S. Lewis and J. R. Tolkien and how WWI impacted the creation of two of our most famous fantasy worlds. The landscapes and images of Narnia and Middle Earth would arguably not have happened had it not been for both men’s experiences in WWI. It has rekindled a desire in me to rewatch and reread all of these books.

It is also a poignant reminder that we can find inspiration and motivation in our darkest moments. As a veteran, many of my greatest and worst memories are tied up around my time in Afghanistan. Many of us take to the trails to find those moments of inspiration and healing.

So I’ll keep working on getting better. One day at a time. I highly recommend this book. It is a great tale of friendship, inspiration and perseverance. I’ll see you out on the trails again soon.

Did you know that James River State Park is an International Dark Sky Park? That means the night sky and stars have no light pollution from surrounding towns and cities.

That is what gave us the idea of adding the 10 Mile Night Race next year. Come run under the stars on April 11th!

Picture yourself running to this view in 2026. We are excited to be bringing back the James River Trail Runs for year 4 on April 11, 2026.

All of the distances from this year will be back: 50 Mile Solo, 50 Mile Relay, 50k solo and hiker, 10 mile solo and hiker.

And we have 2 new options for this year. Want some beautiful miles under the stars? We have added a 10 mile night hike/run. This event starts at 7:30pm so you can finish under the stars.

Secondly, we have added a 3 person 50k relay. This is a great option for folks who need a smaller team or shorter distance.

We will see you at James River State Park on April 11th!

Registration is now open!

Our last pair of stories from Night Train takes a look at some of our younger participants.

Henry Tackett spent a lot of time designing his Little Engine that could on High Bridge Sign. At 6 years old, he and his family are now enjoying a Sweet Frog gift card for winning the sign competition.

Daniel Riddle completed his first 50k at the age of 22. I couldn’t even spell “Ultra” at that age. He and his family sent in a number of photos.

Thanks for running Daniel!

We love to celebrate our DFL’s at events.

Kelly Koebel (first picture) and Jimmy Gabany (not pictured)were our half marathon DFL’s. This was the longest distance Kelly had ever run. In addition to the coveted railroad spike bottle opener, her husband reached out to me months ago with the idea of designing unique finishers award for her. So the medal you see hanging around her was designed by Scott Koebel.

In the 50k Phillip Tickle was the male DFL. Molly Rajendran and Sarah Burrucker tied to take the female DFL’s.

I am also deeply appreciative of Sarah for helping to get some of her family to volunteer for us.

Congratulations to all of the athletes this weekend!

Let’s talk about Band of Runners

Since year 1 of Night Train, we have always tried to make an impact on our community. Either the community around us or the community of runners.

This year, we received a generous donation from Dominion Power as part of our participation in the Virginia State Parks Adventure Series. It allowed us to give extra money to the Friends of High Bridge Trail Group.

It also allowed us to give $1500 to Band of Runners. This money will go into coaching our athletes as well as trail camp, which will be in Austin Texas this year. Our mission at Band of Runners is to help veterans or their families develop healthy habits out on the trails.

We had 2 BOR alumni run this weekend. Matt Preston came out for the half marathon. Jimmy Russell conquered his first night race, finishing the 50k.

Additionally, the Night Train finisher magnets this year were made by Candy Kemp, a BOR alumni. Turtle 2 Goat is her woman, veteran owned small business.

Do you know of any veterans who would benefit from Band of Runners? Applications are available for our 2025 Trail Camp over Veterans Day Weekend. It is provided at no cost and is open to veterans or their family members.

Did these two fly to the finish line? I’ll let you be the judge. Amber Maloney and Christian Livanec were your two most patriotic runners. I believe Amber ran the entire race with the wings on. They each received a $100 Virginia State Parks gift certificate.

Amber also finished her 5th Night Train 50k and will be receiving a customized ceramic finishers bowl.

Congratulations Amber!

Our first Night Train story from the weekend is the continuation of a story from last year. When we met him, Josh Whatley randomly volunteered with us at Tuggle last year. We would learn of his story after the event.

This year, Josh teamed up with Chris Mason and Chris Turner again (with an assist from Dana Perkins) to once again man the Tuggle aid station.

At the same time, the charity founded for his daughter, Courage for Katie was doing a fundraiser. We adopted that as our charity this year. We have donated over $2300 from this race.

Rumor has it, they are already planning an even better aid station next year.

Andrea Beyer and David Burkwall, you two have won a free race with us because of your donation!

Carrie Parker and Anton Kossack, you two have won $100 Virginia State Parks gift certificates.

Thank you all for your generosity. If you won, please reach out to me.
