St Louis Carousel in Faust Park

St Louis Carousel in Faust Park This traditional 1920s carousel with hand-carved horses & deer is located in Faust County Park. If a mask cannot be worn a face shield must be worn.

At this time in order to come into our Carousel building any one age 2 and older must wear a mask covering their nose and mouth. There will be no exceptions - we wish to protect out staff, the children coming into the Carousel and their family members. Thank you for understanding and helping us keep everyone safe. Tickets to ride the Carousel are $2/person per ride. Buy three tickets for $5 (saving a $1).

Today we bring you Susie the ostrich. This windup toy was made by TPS in Japan. From what we can find the tab on, the clown’s head once wore a red hat.

TPS stands for Toyo Playthings Ltd. The company was most active in the late 1950s and early 1960s. They focused on toys for younger children and created many colorful tin toys. They disappeared from the industry in the 1970s.

This 1950s toy is a wind-up tin circus car that apparently could blow a ball up and down from its smokestack and was made by KO in Japan.

KO is the trademark of Yoshiya, which produced toys from 1950 until 1970. They are also known as Kobe Yoko Ltd. and was a major Japanese toy maker during the post WW-II era. They specialized in mechanical or wind-up toys featuring fanciful designs, but they are also known for their extensive line of “Robby the Robot” knockoff toys.

We have unfortunately not found out much about this week’s toy beyond his name. So, this week we bring you “Rembrandt,” the monkey painter. Rembrandt seems to be painting two people, and it looks like a background appears, but unfortunately, we have not been able to find a video of this guy that shows the painting changing. But we did find a picture of this guy working on YouTube! See it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r01-I8TlgaI

Rembrandt was created by Nomura in the 1950s or 1960s. Nomura was started by Eijiro Nomura in Tokyo in the 1930s. The company is said to have helped shape the toy industry following WWII when it saw most of its success. Nomura was known for its innovative and high quality toys but it saw a decrease in its popularity by the late 1970s as it could not adapt to the ever increasing changes of the toy industry. The company persisted until 1992 when it was purchase by Hasbro.

Today we bring you “Artie the Clown and his Crazy Car,” and we hope you are not afraid of clowns! Artie was created in the 1950s by Unique Art Manufacturing from Newark, New Jersey. Jojo, his dog, reminds us that it’s not safe to allow your dog to ride on the hood of your car or to have that many patches on your tires.

Unique Art Manufacturing Company was an American toy company founded in 1916. They produced inexpensive toys, including wind-up mechanical toys such as this one. One of its early products was a wind-up toy featuring two tin boxers.

Unique's president, Samuel Berger, was a good friend of toy magnate Louis Marx, and the two men's companies at times cooperated, with Marx providing tooling to Unique and sometimes acting as a distributor for Unique's products.

The circumstances surrounding Unique Art's eventual demise are unclear, but the company appears to have disappeared in 1952, when it was picked up in a corporate merger by the Jerry O'Mahony Diner Company with some evidence of Marx picking up parts of the line.

Today we bring you Gino Neapolitan, the balloon blower. We think this guy is adorable and wish he worked! He is also made in the 1950s and imported from Japan by Rosko, the same company that brought us the bartender from our last post. Ours is missing its bubble reservoir, and in researching him, that seems to be common.
We found a video of this toy working on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/habs1JbueOg

Today, we bring you from the 1950s the “Bartender Toy” by Rosko, another toy we really hope wasn’t really for kids. Ours is missing the top of its shaker so we hope he doesn’t start mixing up some drinks for his toy friends. Especially since when he is shaking up drinks smoke blows out of his ears…

Rosko Toy Company was a US importer of Japanese mechanical and battery-operated tin toys. They operated from the 1950s to the 1960s. And this isn’t the only bartender they had; they also had one of Charlie Weaver. And if you are like me and have no idea who that is, he was a character played by Cliff Arquette.

If you are interested, we found a video on Youtube of him in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yotgdCEt_9k

We really do promise these toys aren’t all taking part in adult extracurricular activities, so stick with us while we get through these first few!

Our second antique toy is the bunny rabbit drinking carrot juice. This guy also dates to the 1950s and was made in Japan by a company called ALPS Toys.

ALPS made battery-operated mechanical toys and produced some of the better quality Japanese toys throughout the post-war years. Alps Shoji Ltd. Tokyo, Japan was founded in 1948 and specialized in toy vehicles and novelties. A lot of their toys were battery operated and made of mixed tinplate and tin. The distinctive logo (the word "ALPS" printed on top of a mountain peak) of this company makes it easy to identify.

The company was known for its innovative and often whimsical designs and manufactured a variety of tinplate toys, including robots, cars, space-themed toys, and other mechanical and wind-up toys, including this rabbit and the smoking, shoe-shining panda bear from our last post.

This lovely little bear may look a little freaky now, but we are sure at one time it was cute! He dates to the 1950s and was actually marketed as a panda bear that was smoking and shining shoes. Not something that makes one think today “hey, let’s get this for my kids,” but hey - the 1950s were a different time! Our little friend here apparently is shining his shoes but in doing research we have found out that it apparently has many hobbies! You could find him fishing, blowing up balloons, and even drinking what we assume is soda.

And good news everyone, if you would like your own “Smoking and shoe shining Panda Bear,” there are several for sale on eBay right now!! If you would like to see him in action, check out this video we found on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qc1uo434O6E

If you’ve been to visit us anytime in the past 20 years you have most likely noticed our antique toy exhibit. And maybe even wondered who Howard and Irma Ohlendorf are and what their connection to the St. Louis Carousel is.

Over the next few months, we are going to explore the toy exhibit, but we thought we’d tell you about Howard and Irma first.

Howard C. Ohlendorf was born in Chicago and came to St. Louis at the age of 3 after his parents died. As an adult, he went to work for Al Broker making acrylic braces for orthodontists and was able to purchase the company after four years, renaming it Ohlendorf Orthodontic Labs. He was active in many civic activities, including the founding of the St. Louis Community College, the McDonnell Planetarium, and the Museum of Transportation. He ran for Congress twice and said later that the voters had given him an overwhelming mandate to stay home. He was married to Irma for 52 years before her death in 1994.

Howard and his wife, Irma, made many gifts to the Saint Louis County park system, including some of the land for both Ohlendorf Park and Ohlendorf Park West.
In 1963, the Forest Park Highlands Amusement Park burned. During the fire and the subsequent cleanup of the site, many rides were lost. Howard saw that the St. Louis Carousel was probably going to be sold and taken out of state, so he purchased it in 1965. He then donated it to Saint Louis County Parks, and it was installed at Sylvan Springs Park, where it ran for 13 years. When it was realized that the carousel needed to find a new interior home, Howard again stepped forward and helped make that happen.

Howard Ohlendorf died April 15, 2002, at the age of 86. But the Ohlendorf family remains good friends of Faust Park.
