Happy 100th to the phenomenal writer and activist James Baldwin (who died far too early in 1987--not long after I met him and heard him speak at the University of Chicago.) His eloquence and fury on the subject of race in America are exemplary (and, alas, needed now as much as ever.) If you haven't seen the documentary "I Am Not Your Negro," it's an excellent place to start with him; and, though he wrote fiction and poetry as well, I think it's essays that elevate him into the Pantheon of America's greats....
