The Puerto Rican Cultural Center is disappointed in the inaccurate and bias media coverage of this year’s annual Fiesta Boricua festival. Even though the media has not covered the positive events we’ve held to kickoff the 29th Fiesta Boricua on Friday and Saturday morning, they have tried to tarnish our reputation with false reports. For 29 years the Puerto Rican Cultural Center has organized Fiesta Boricua to celebrate the beauty and resiliency of the Puerto Rican people. This year, like every year, we held multiple kick-off events and invited the media to showcase the best of our culture, but no major news outlets came to cover these wonderful events, which included; a press conference celebrating The Paseo Boricua Flags of Steel becoming a historical landmark and honoring the 50th anniversary of our Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos High School; the first gallery exhibit held at the new Paseo Boricua Arts Building, showcasing artwork by at-risk students from Puerto Rico; and Saturday morning’s Puerto Rican Agenda meeting with representatives from Puerto Rico, including the Mayors of Ponce and Comerío where the community came together to discuss how Puerto Ricans can build a better future together. Instead, news outlets have published false headlines claiming that the 29th Fiesta Boricua festival was shut down due to a shooting.
The facts are that we had a very beautiful festival where we held our annual Catholic Mass with Father Raúl Morales Berrios from Puerto Rico, enjoyed games with our youth, and celebrated the beauty of our culture. It wasn’t until around 6:30pm that a physical altercation took place inside of the festival, which is the incident that caused the Chicago Police Department to shut down the festival. The Chicago Police immediately began conducting sweeps, and the Festival was emptied in a matter of minutes. The unfortunate (but not fatal) shooting that happened on Washtenaw Ave. on Saturday night happened 30-45 minutes after Division Street had been swept and cleared by CPD and private security, and had nothing to do with the Festival.
We will continue with the festival as planned on Sunday 09/04. We have gathered as an organization, with our security, community leaders, and groups trained in de-escalation/mediation to ensure today’s festival goes on smoothly and safely. At 5pm we will have our protocol ceremony with our honored guests and political leaders to hold a community recognition of the proclamation of the Flags of Steel as Chicago historical landmarks, and we invite the media to come see our community for who we truly are. We have been resilient in the face of great obstacles. Through trials and tribulations this community always comes together to advance as a people, and these flags are a perfect symbol of this resiliency.

Paseo Boricua has been the heart and soul of Chicago’s Puerto Rican community for decades. But the area has been impacted in recent years by gentrification and displacement of some longtime residents, as rents rise and luxury buildings sprout up on its borders.

Fiesta Boricua: De Bandera a Bandera

Fiesta Boricua “De Bandera a Bandera,” a celebration of Humboldt Park’s Puerto Rican identity and patriotism. During the Fiestas, our community gathers during Labor Day Weekend, in what is known to be the biggest Puerto Rican Festival of the Midwest. This event was founded to allow Puerto Rican families to reassure their patriotism and cultural roots. Every year, a different town from Puerto Rico is invited to join us in the celebration to represent “Lo Mejor de Nuestros Pueblos” (The Best of Our Towns).
