New Delhi, Jan 17 (IANS) Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Friday that in cases related to national security, trial in absentia should be initiated against fugitives who have been absconding from the country for a long time.During a meeting in the national capital with Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav to assess the implementation of three new criminal laws in the state, HM Shah said that the Indian Civil Security Code includes provisions for trial in absentia, enabling action against such fugitive offenders.HM Shah said that the essence of the three new criminal laws introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi lies in the provision of delivering justice within three years, from the filing of an FIR till the verdict comes from Supreme Court.Appreciating the efforts made so far by the Madhya Pradesh government in implementing the new criminal laws, the Home Minister emphasised the need for their 100 per cent implementation in the state at the earliest.HM Shah mentioned that before registering cases under sections related to terrorism and organised crime, senior police officials should examine whether the case qualifies for the application of those sections.He emphasised that any misuse of these legal provisions would undermine the sanctity of the new criminal laws.HM Shah emphasised the need for continuous monitoring of the conversion of ZERO FIRs into regular FIRs....

Kolkata, Jan 17 (IANS) Service Doctors' Forum (SDF), an association of doctors practicing in West Bengal, approached the office of Governor C.V. Ananda Bose on Friday, seeking his intervention in initiating a judicial probe into the deaths of a woman and a newborn at a state-run medical facility in West Midnapore district allegedly after being administered with expired Ringer's Lactate intravanous fluid.In an email communique, the SDF has also opposed the decision of the West Bengal government to suspend 12 doctors of the medical facility.The SDF has claimed that the suspension of the 12 doctors are aimed at diverting attention from the real reason of the death, which was the administration of expired Ringer’s Lactate supplied by a blacklisted entity, Paschim Banga Pharmaceuticals Private Limited.SDF has also claimed that from the post-mortem report of the deceased woman, Mamoni Ruidas, who died on January 10, it is clear the death was due to the adverse impact of saline or medicine administered on her and in such a situation, the suspension of the 12 doctors are attempts to divert attention from the main issue."I do not understand where the state government reached the conclusion that the negligence by the doctors was responsible for the mishap....

Imphal, Jan 17 (IANS) In a significant blow to the illicit drug trade, Assam Rifles successfully intercepted and recovered a massive cache of banned Yaba tablets and Brown Sugar worth around Rs 62 crores from Mata Village in Manipur’s Churachandpur District, officials said on Friday. The Assam Rifles personnel also arrested two drug peddlers including a woman and recovered Rs 3.37 lakh, four smart mobile phones with Indian and Myanmar SIM cards from them.A Defence spokesman said that acting on secret information, the para-military troops launched a search operation and on Thursday night recovered the drugs, smuggled from Myanmar, from Mata village, five km south of Churachandpur district headquarters, which is 64 km from the state capital Imphal.A column of Assam Rifles established a Mobile Vehicle Check Post at the Mata village and intercepted a vehicle (Fortuner) and upon frisking, two individuals confessed to carrying contraband items which included Brown sugar and methamphetamine tablets (also known as Yaba tablets).The apprehended drug peddlers were identified as Chingsen (36) and L Pausuanlal Simte (38) and they are residents of Bible Hill Renkai in Churachandpur District.The spokesman said that the Brown Sugar, worth around Rs 12 crores contained in 208 soap cases while two lakhs highly addictive methamphetamine tablets, valued at Rs 50 crores, contained in other packets.A cash amount of Rs 3.37 lakh, four smart mobile phones with six Indian SIM cards, one Myanmar SIM card (MPT) and a Fortuner car were seized from the drug peddlers....

Sydney, Jan 17 (IANS) Two men in the northeastern Australian state of Queensland have been hospitalized with rare and potentially deadly mosquito-borne viruses. An elderly man from the city of Townsville, over 1,000 km northwest of Brisbane, has been admitted to hospital with dengue fever despite being vaccinated against it, marking the region's first breakthrough in five years, Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) quoted Queensland health authorities as saying on Friday.At the same time a middle-aged man from Townsville, who recently traveled to southern Queensland, was in hospital with Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV).It was the first confirmed human case of JEV in Queensland since 2022.Townsville Public Health Unit Director Steven Donohue told reporters on Friday that both men were in stable condition.He said that the elderly man was unlucky because local mosquitoes in the Townsville area carry a bacteria that blocks transmission of dengue.Mosquitoes from the area where he was bitten have been collected for analysis, Xinhua news agency reported.Both dengue fever and JEV are types of flavivirus that can be fatal in rare cases.Health authorities in the east coast states of New South Wales and Victoria have issued warnings over JEV in January after detecting it in mosquitoes....

Windhoek, Jan 17 (IANS) Namibia's Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS) issued a warning to farmers following the outbreak of Lumpy Skin Disease (L*D) in several areas.There have been 73 confirmed cases of the disease, a debilitating viral infection that affects cattle, in the Otjombinde Constituency within the Epukiro Veterinary District in the Omaheke Region of eastern Namibia, Johannes Shoopala, acting chief veterinary officer at the DVS, said in a statement."L*D is a state-controlled disease, and wherever it occurs, it must be reported to the nearest state veterinarian," he said.According to Shoopala, L*D is transmitted by blood-feeding insects such as flies, mosquitoes, and ticks.He noted that depending on the epidemiological situation of the area, local state veterinarians are empowered by law to implement control measures to safeguard the livestock industry, which may include quarantine of the affected area, vaccination of all in-contact animals with the recommended vaccine, and treatment of all animals showing symptoms of L*D, Xinhua news agency reported."The directorate is strongly advising farmers countrywide to vaccinate their cattle against L*D, control biting insects, and report any suspected L*D case to their nearest state veterinary services office as required by law," Shoopala added.Namibia exports beef to the European Union, Norway, China, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States.Lumpy skin disease represents a highly significant viral affliction affecting cattle, attributed to the Lumpy Skin Disease Virus, which is categorised under the genus Capripoxvirus within the family Poxviridae....
