It is with great sadness that we note the passing of the legendary classical percussionist Albert Payson this weekend at the age of 90. Albert was a faculty member of the School of Music and a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for many decades.

His influence on our percussion program is immeasurable as he curated and nurtured it into what it is today. He impacted the careers of countless students who came to DePaul specifically to study with him, and he was a much-beloved member of our community. Not only was he a dedicated educator and an incredible percussionist, but he was also an entrepreneur, inventor, composer, and writer. His broad contributions to the percussion field led to his induction into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame in 2001.

His loss will be felt for a long while by all who knew him and admired him, and his legacy will continue to inspire. More on Albert’s life and career is available on the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s website: https://bit.ly/AlPaysonTribute

The DePaul Opera Theatre presents Dark Sisters by Nico Muhly (composer) and Stephen Karam (librettist). Based on true events, Dark Sisters explores the desires and dangers of women in a polygamous sect grappling with faith, family, and freedom as their hidden world is shaken by outside forces. Who will dare to leave, and at what cost? Folksongs, hymns, and the landscape of southern Utah inspire Nico Muhly's lyrical score.

The production is directed by Amy Hutchison with guest conductor Emanuele Andrizzi under the program direction of Opera Coordinator Nicholas Hutchinson.

Don't miss the final DePaul Opera Theatre opera production of the academic year - two performances only - June 7 at 7:30PM and June 9 at 2PM in Jarvis Opera Hall.
