Our DePaul Opera Theatre, under the direction of Opera Coordinator Nicholas Hutchinson, is pleased to announce a season of Celebrating American Opera with two captivating operas written by American composers.
The Winter Quarter production will be Street Scene by Kurt Weill (composer) and Langston Hughes (librettist). Street Scene charts the paths of individuals heroically trying to connect in an urban world that is exhausting and in which one has no privacy. The opera shows us that we are collectively responsible for the lives and well-being of those in our own tight-knit communities, whether we succeed or fail.
The production is directed by George Cederquist, with guest conductor Catherine O'Shaughnessy. The dates for the production will be Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at 7:30 PM, Friday, March 15, 2024, at 7:30 PM and Sunday, March 17, 2024, at 2 PM in Jarvis Opera Hall.
The Spring Quarter production will be Dark Sisters by Nico Muhly (composer) and Stephen Karam (librettist). Based on true events, Dark Sisters explores the desires and dangers of women in a polygamous sect grappling with faith, family, and freedom as their hidden world is shaken by outside forces. Who will dare to leave, and at what cost? Folksongs, hymns, and the landscape of southern Utah inspire Nico Muhly's lyrical score.
Amy Hutchison directs the production with guest conductor Emanuele Andrizzi. The dates for the production will be Friday, June 7, 2024, at 7:30 PM and Sunday, June 9, 2024, at 2 PM in Jarvis Opera Hall.
Tickets for both opera productions will go on sale November 1 at 10 AM. For more info on the opera productions, visit https://bit.ly/DPOTAmericanOpera
