Flore Laurentienne is an open window to the technicolor soundscapes of Mathieu David Gagnon – the Canadian composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist who shapes vast orchestral sound to interpret the rugged wilderness and waters of his native Québec. The namesake of an inventory documenting St. Lawrence Valley flora, Flore Laurentienne illumes the science and spirit of his surrounds through expansive string orchestrations melded with the textures and experimentation of early analogue synths.

Reimagining Tropiques: Then and Now examines articles, comments, and essays on negritude, creolization, and transatlantic Surrealism published by the iconic Martinican magazine Tropiques from 1941 to 1945, and explores the cultural syncretism between French modernism and the Afro-Caribbean experience.

Including a series of pieces/sketches that integrate traditional Afro-Caribbean rhythms and chants, contemporary classical music, and avant-garde jazz improvisation, as well as poetry and spoken word with the idea of reinterpreting the ideas to illustrate the work narrative of the journal.

Trumpeter Riley Mulherkar is best known as a founding member of The Westerlies, a New York-based brass quartet of West Coast expats who play a mix of jazz, modern classical and folk compositions, high on tunefulness. This deep admiration for the American songbook can also be heard all over Riley, “one of the best debut records to come out in a long, long time” (DownBeat). Described as “über hip, modern yet timeless” (DownBeat) Mulherkar is a 2020 recipient of Lincoln Center’s Emerging Artist Award for his work as “an original bandleader, composer, arranger, educator, community activist and advocate for jazz and the arts.”

Jan Jelinek’s works deal with the transformation of sounds, translating source materials from popular music into abstract, reduced textures. Bypassing traditional musical instruments, he constructs collages using tiny sound fragments from a wide variety of recording devices: tape recorders, digital samplers, media players and the like. The recordings are processed into repetitive loops that boil the original down to its essentials, the source material becoming indecipherable in most cases.

In his two decades as an integral member of New York City’s improvised music community, saxophonist and composer Tony Malaby has emerged as a wholly unique and singular voice.

For this special masterclass, Tony will be leading an open rehearsal with a backing band of Trombonist Jeb Bishop and Charles Rumback’s long-standing trio with Jim Baker and John Tate.

In addition to leading his New York based Tamarindo Trio with Nasheet Waits and William Parker, Mr. Malaby teaches at Berklee College of Music.

Join us this Winter Solstice for a very special pair of concerts to ring in the season!

This year, Winter Solstice Concerts invites NYC-based bassist, composer, writer and arts activist William Parker to Chicago. On the first evening, 12/21, William will join Hamid Drake to perform their legendary duo. They will be join by a first sit featuring legendary Chicago guitarist, Bill MacKay along with Michael Zerang performing their acoustic duo. On the second night, 12/22, William Parker will put together an ensemble of Chicago-based musicians to perform his original composition CHICAGO SHOUT.
