Epiphany Center for the Arts is pleased to showcase the ceramic work of Cherylle Booker in her first solo exhibition "Titania's Masquerade: Unseen Worlds of Wonder" opening this Friday, September 22 in our Slemmons Gallery.

Cherylle Booker is a ceramicist and painter. She takes inspiration from fairy tales and world mythology, using such symbols to explore personal and psychological themes. Cherylle describes her work as a therapeutic process, “If I am feeling a certain emotion, taking that to the clay helps me process those emotions. And it allows other people to have a glimpse into how those things feel to me - and maybe other people who are in other situations.” Her ceramic work incorporates porcelain, stoneware, glass, and a wide variety of glazes to bring her creatures and characters to vivid life. Cherylle is represented by Project Onward and has been an artist with the Project Onward studio since 2019.

To attend the opening reception, please RSVP at: The Opening Reception of Cherylle Booker: Titania's Masquerade: Unseen Worlds of Wonder on Friday, Sept 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets | Chicago, IL | Slemmons Gallery (etix.com)

Join us on Friday, Sept. 22 for the opening reception of Cherylle Booker's exhibition Titania's Masquerade: Unseen Worlds of Wonder.

The ceramic sculptures of Cherylle Booker draw deep from the well of ancient myth. Booker’s hands build the likenesses of everything from Shakespearean fairy queens to Yoruba water spirits to biblical seraphim. A fairy-tale addict from early childhood, such supernatural figures are instinctive subjects for the artist. However, Booker depicts these characters with a purpose. They are vessels for psychological explorations, ways of talking through subjects of PTSD, resilience, and the challenges of navigating the norms of the neurotypical world. The Opening Reception of Mark Ballogg Exhibition: Paris Sojourn: Père Lachaise / Cityscapes

Date: Friday, August 18, 2023

Doors: 5PM for Golden Hour

Reception: 6-9PM

Paris Sojourn: Père Lachaise / Cityscapes references photographer Mark Ballogg’s fourteen-year relationship with Paris.

In 1981, shortly after graduating from Columbia College, Chicago, Ballogg began a yearlong scholarship in Paris. During this time, he wandered the Parisian streets with a 4×5 view camera capturing city views. While exploring Paris on foot, he discovered Père Lachaise, the largest cemetery in Paris and the most visited necropolis in the world. At the time, it was forbidden to photograph the cemetery with a tripod and an attempt to procure access documents was unsuccessful. Ballogg returned to Chicago, started a family, and established a flourishing commercial architectural photography studio.

Twelve years later, Ballogg’s interest in Père Lachaise was rekindled when he read an article in the Chicago Tribune about plans to move the buried remains in the historically rich oldest section of the cemetery, where the decaying architecture was part of the visual charm. Fearing the photographic impact of that change, he returned in 1994 for three weeks and shot over 200 photographs. The color dye transfers and black and white carbon prints in this exhibition are evidence of Ballogg’s fascination with Paris and its most iconic cemetery.

Reflecting on his Paris sojourn, Ballogg states: “During this period, my approach to photography was largely intuitive, driven by my interest in architecture. I looked for a way to go beyond documentation, elevating the image to a new level of emotional and intellectual vibrancy by arranging and distilling complex disparate elements into a dynamic whole.” Paris Sojourn: Père Lachaise / Cityscapes reveals a new and surprising reimagining that transcends mere photo-documentation of Ballogg’s captured subjects.
