Planes of Fame Air Museum Where Warbirds Fly and Aviation History Lives! World-famous aviation museum based in Chino, Californ Come see us!
(1689)

While the journey from 10 original aircraft to over 150 has been a long one, our mission has never changed. It is the Mission of Planes of Fame Air Museum to preserve aviation history, inspire interest in aviation, educate the public, and honor aviation pioneers and veterans. And although the Museum spans the history of manned flight from the Wright Flyer replica to the Space Age of Apollo, many m

ore chapters remain to be written and many more stories told before the vision of a young Ed Maloney is finally fulfilled.

It is incredible to think that it was just 28 years of aviation advancement between the first flights of the World War 1 era Hanriot HD.1 (1915) and the World War 2 era Gloster Meteor jet (1943)! Our particular Hanriot was built in 1918 while our Meteor T7 was built in 1949. The Hanriot had a max speed of 114mph while the Meteor topped out at 623mph.

⭐History Takes Flight This Saturday at Planes of Fame
Looking for something the whole family will enjoy and be talking about for a long time? Then come see us at Planes of Fame Air Museum this Saturday, November 2, 2024 as we present another great edition of Hangar Talk and one of our fan-favorites for our Flying Demo – the Lockheed P-38J Lightning. Doors to the Museum open at 9:00am and regular admission prices are in effect (Museum Members always get in FREE!). In addition to Hangar Talk, we're hosting the 7th Annual Ed Maloney Scale Model Contest this Saturday. Here's your chance to serve as a judge in this display of talent. It's a lot of fun and a chance to introduce our younger visitors to the magic and wonder of Model Building.

Hangar Talk Begins at 10:30am - Here's what's in store . . .

🛩️We Explore Aerial Recon
The Museum's Mike Smith will show us one of the most important roles that aircraft have provided since their inception - serving as our eyes in the sky. Aerial Reconnaissance has served the civilian marketplace to aid in mapmaking, but Mike's focus will be on its military applications. From crude attempts in the early days of World War One to dangerous unarmed missions flying camera planes in World War II to the satellites and drones of today.

🪖A Fascinating Character from World War One
The First World War would see the appearance of a new kind of warrior; the fighter pilot. While names from that war such as Manfred von Richthofen and Eddie Rickenbacker are well known, one of the most flamboyant and daring of these pilots was the French ace Charles Nungesser, who led an incredible life of adventure and an indomitable will. The Museum's Adam Estes will help us learn more about Nungesser in this presentation and discover Nungesser's connection to the Planes of Fame air Museum.

🖲️A Look at Hollywood's Prince of Drones
Reginald Denny led a fascinating life. From his comedic acting in the early silent film era to a career as a debonair supporting man in the 1930s to an innovative inventor who served his country with new technology during the Second World War. And underlying it all was a love of aviation, scale models, and early remote control aircraft. The Museum's Brian Finnegan will look at Denny's life to show us that if it ain't fun, it ain't worth doing, a motto that Denny himself could have coined.

✈️Sneak Peek at the 91st Bomb Group Display
Saturday marks the soft-opening of our new display focused on the service of one of World War Two's greatest heavy bombardment groups, the 91st Bomb Group. We'll look briefly at this new display, which will be completed during the month of November.

🛫The Roar of two Allison Engines This Saturday!
We're excited to present this month's Flying Demo featuring the one of our most popular aircraft, the Lockheed P-38J Lightning. One of only a handful of P-38s still flying, this is sure to be a real treat for everyone! Innovative, fast, and agile, the P-38 served the United States Army Air Force well during the Second World War. Lightnings escorted the heavy bombers in Europe and took on the Luftwaffe where it earned the nickname forked-tail devil. But the Lightnings really shined in the Pacific War, where their twin engines gave them speed and their armament gave them the firepower to take on everything the Japanese Imperial Army and Navy could put up in the skies.

We kick-off the Flying Demo with a brief outdoor presentation by the Museum's Richard Malvino. Rich will tell us about the P-38's history in World War II and describe its range of features. Then, pilot Chris Fahey will start both the 1,500 horsepower Allison V-1710 liquid-cooled inline engines directly in front of the crowd and taxi away – a great photo and video op! While the aircraft gets in position for take-off, Rich will conduct our Member's Only Raffle drawing for a flight in one of the Museum's World War II trainers for one lucky Museum member. Then Chris will put on a great aerial display over the Museum for twenty minutes, demonstrating the speed and grace of the Lightning. After their return to the Museum, guests will be able to ask questions of Chris to understand what its like to sit in the cockpit of this international treasure. Guests will also get to see the P-38 up-close for photos.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT PLANES OF FAME THIS SATURDAY
In addition to all of the above, there will be great tasting food and treats from our visiting food trucks plus hands-on demonstrations, historical re-enactors, and our Museum Guides will help you experience the Museum with stories and historical data. Plus the B-17 will be open for guests to visit. A great way to spend the day! Hope to See You at the Museum This Saturday, November 2, 2024

Continuing the look at our Lockheed P-38J Lightning (which will fly November 2nd here at Chino Airport for our next Hangar Talk event!)... here's a throwback photo from 1974 shot and shared by Gary Maisack! Our P-38 has gone through many schemes... Joltin' Joise, Porky II, and more to its current '23 Skidoo' scheme. We'd love to see some retro photos of older schemes! Post them in the comments if you have them!

❓DID YOU KNOW❓The Museum’s P-38J, built in Burbank, California, and delivered into service in May 1944, is the 5,018th P-38 built - halfway to the total number of Lightnings produced. It was assigned to the 483rd Air Base Squadron in Santa Maria, California - a Replacement Training Unit providing combat crew training for P-38s during WWII. In September 1945, the aircraft was transferred to the Hancock College of Aeronautics where it was used to instruct maintenance personnel. The Museum acquired the aircraft in 1959. In 1988, it was restored to flight thanks to a generous donation from Bob and Josie Pond. See the Lightning FLY at our next Hangar Talk Flying Event on November 2nd! Doors open at 9am.
