The irrigation system's winterization process is set to take place on Monday. Upon completion of the shutdown, Brian will dismantle the Variable Frequency Drive pump and deliver it to Columbus for refurbishment during the winter. This pump serves as the main irrigation source for the golf course. An interesting statistical highlight: our pump house records show a total water distribution of 43,553,000 gallons for the season.

Fall work on the front 9 tees and fairways are underway. The extracted cores must dry before being dragged, chopped, and blown away.

Congratulations go out to Stillmeadow member, Dave Taylor on winning Ohio’s 2nd District Congressional US House seat, Stillmeadow member Mark Tekulve’s reelection as Clermont County Prosecutor, fellow Pierce Township resident Adam Bird on his reelection to the State of Ohio District 63 House of Representatives, Mark Johnson on his reelection to the Ohio District 92 House of Representatives & Jean Schmidt on her reelection to the Ohio District 62 House of Representatives. All of these people were in attendance here at Stillmeadow for our election night celebration!

The weather was absolutely ideal for our Superintendents Revenge golf bash - a real stroke of luck! Cheers to Brian and Heather for conjuring up those zany course obstacles and sticking around to clean up the aftermath - you two are the best! It was a blast of a day to conclude the 2024 golf season. Here are some pics of the crazy challenges our competitors tackled across 18 holes of golfing mayhem.

This week we will continue with our 9:00 AM start and encourage you to let me know if you plan to play as it helps to have the clubs and carts ready to go when you get here.

We moved through quite a bit of shop credit this week and need you to continue to use yours before the end of the year. I would be happy to help with any special orders you may have.

We have completed phase one of our fall maintenance and as cooler weather moves in we thought it would be a good idea to remind everyone of how we need to handle frost so I asked Brian to put together a note to share with the membership which I have included below.

FROM BRIAN:

First and foremost, I would like to thank all of you for a successful season.

Our maintenance crew battled the heat and dry conditions all summer long to provide you with the best possible playing conditions. We couldn’t be more proud of what we were able to accomplish.

As you know, we have completed our fall greens aeration processes. We will continue to tidy up the excess sand throughout the coming days. This is the necessary evil to ensure we have good conditions going into the winter months. Spring greens aeration is scheduled for some time in the month of March 2025.

Due to unforeseen weather, we had to push back our fairway and tee aeration to November 4th/5th. As always, we plan to do the front 9 one day, and the back 9 the next. All operations are dependent on the weather. We appreciate your patience and understanding with these processes.

The cooler weather and falling leaves will soon be upon us. With the cooler weather comes FROST DELAYS. There is a very good chance we will have our first frost delays this coming week with morning temperatures getting down in the mid to high 30’s.

1. Crunchy/Frozen grass is vulnerable to damage. Frost covered grass can be easily damaged by foot traffic, leading to dead or weakened turf that can take over a month to recover.
2. Location Matters! Even if you don’t see frost at home, microclimates at the course (like shaded or low-lying areas) can still have frost.
3. Greens Are at High Risk! Closely mown areas like putting surfaces, tee boxes, and fairways are especially vulnerable to frost damage due to concentrated foot traffic.
4. Frost-Free Doesn’t Mean GO! Even if frost clears on the first hole, the course may need extra time for maintenance before play can begin.
5. Sunlight Speeds Up Play! Shade from trees can extend frost delays. More sunlight helps melt frost faster and gets golfers back on the course sooner.

The cool weather will also bring the end of the season for our BERMUDA GRASS range tee. While this type of grass is very durable and recovers quickly it requires warmer soil temperatures to fill in the hitting areas. The warmup range will remain open on the mats until the spring brings warmer weather.

We appreciate Beach's Tree Service for deploying their Boom Truck to replace the maintenance yard's overhead lighting. This upgrade is particularly crucial for early morning operations. Notably, the crew has already completed more than half of the back nine tasks before 9am.

We would like to highlight a remark made by Jim Riesenburg, our contracted person hired to assist with our aeration project:

‘Brian, having worked on over 100 golf courses this year, I must say that this is the most well-maintained facility I've encountered. The grounds are truly immaculate; you should be very proud.'

High praise considering the disaster we had to clean up just over a week ago!

Today's workday was exceptionally long for the crew, lasting from 4:30 AM to 6:30 PM, as they worked towards making the Stillmeadow greens exceptional again in 2025. These photographs document the progress. The front nine is now complete and will open on Thursday, while work on the back nine will conclude on Thursday.
