We are deeply saddened to report that Lt. Scott Underwood passed away unexpectedly late yesterday afternoon, May 19. Lt. Underwood was a native of Oconee County and faithfully served this community as a Deputy Sheriff for 21 years. He had genuine passion for his work in law enforcement and was beloved by all who had the privilege to work with him. Lt. Underwood was a devoted husband and father of two teenage sons.

Please keep his family and his Sheriff’s Office family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time as we grieve our tremendous loss and say goodbye to our friend and brother.

No arrangements have been made at this time.

Especially for Elsie

THE REAL MCCOYS: Considered a highly attractive woman, Mary Elizabeth (Coleman) McCoy (1856 - 1923) became the devoted wife of Lark Howard McCoy (1856 - 1938). The two young lovers married on Aug. 13th, 1875 in Pike Co., KY.

By 1880, Mary Elizabeth, her husband, Larkin, and their two small children settled and lived humbly at Peters Creek, Pike Co., KY. Lark was a hardworking farmer who could neither read nor write; however, Mary could do both and was able to teach the children. She lived the life of a typical pioneer woman in eastern Kentucky.

By 1900, Mary and Lark had increased the size of their close family; and they had a grandchild living amongst them, as well.

In retaliation [for the ongoing feud atrocities and killings of the past] the Hatfields, on New Year’s morning 1888, attacked and burned the [Randolph] McCoy home, killing two of McCoy’s [adult] children and severely beating his wife.

“Defeated, [Randolph] McCoy moved to Pikeville. From then on, [Perry] Cline was the effective leader of the McCoy forces in the feud, and Ranel McCoy became an embittered old man, running a ferry in Pikeville and talking to anyone who would listen about his sufferings at the hands of the Hatfields.”
