To celebrate our upcoming event, Age of the Viking, we have a fun little Viking fact for you! Did you know that Vikings didn’t actually call themselves Vikings? While the exact origin of the word is uncertain, many theories believe it was derived from the Old Norse word ‘vikingr’, which usually meant pirate or raider. It was used between the 12th and 14th centuries and was likely derived from an even earlier Scandinavian word. So, instead of Viking, they would have instead used the term Norsemen.

While the terms Viking and Norse both refer to people from Scandinavia, Viking is actually a more specific term. The Norse were people who lived in Scandinavia from the late 8th to early 11th century, and Vikings were a group of norsemen who were more particularly warriors.

We don’t just dress in medieval garb! We also enjoy pulling out the formal wear, especially for one of our new favorite events - the annual Burns Night Dinner at West Oaks Farm Market, presented by our friends at City of Wi******er Pipes and Drums, a fellow non-profit organization. Last night, a few members of our Ravenwood family dusted off their kilts and donned our favorite dresses to celebrate the legacy of Robert Burns, Scotland’s most cherished poet.

Thank you to our volunteer coordinator, Bobby Moncrief, for setting up this evening for us, and congratulations to his lovely wife, Cathy, for winning first place in the shortbread competition! We also want to shout out our members Dan and Terry Carter, as well as Bob Edlich, for winning in the silent auction, and a congratulations to all the other winners of the night. We hope everyone enjoys their goodies!

We would also like to give another round of applause to the City of Wi******er Pipes and Drums group for a wonderful performance and for a successful evening. We can’t wait to come back next year!

Piggy banks. Everyone has owned them. From the classic soft pink, to white, even transitioning from pigs to other animals, it’s almost impossible to have never heard of a piggy bank. But, have you ever looked at that brightly painted ceramic pig and wondered where they came up with the idea? We have too! So we went searching.

Piggy banks actually originated in the Middle Ages, with the oldest to date Germanic piggy banks dating back to the 13th century. Back then, people would store their spare change in pots made of an orange clay called “pygg” (would have been pronounced more like pug). As the English language evolved, the ‘y’, which sounded like a ‘u’, eventually came to be pronounced as ‘I’ (why is English hard??). Coincidentally, the old English word for pig was “picga”, with the Middle East word evolving to “pigge”, most likely because the animals rolled around in pygg mud and dirt.

So over the next couple hundred years, as the languages and words grew and evolved, pygg and pigge began to be pronounced the same. People simply began to forget that pygg referred to a clay and was used for pots. In later centuries, as potters began getting requests for “pygg” banks, they began to shape them as pigs for an excellent play on the words and resulted in a fun little item that delighted children.

Unfortunately, the earlier banks weren’t made with the hole in the bottom where you could simply uncap to get your money out, so you quite literally had to “break the bank”. It’s quite rare to find one of these that are still intact because of this. If you do, there may be some treasures inside 😉🐷

January 9th marks the beginning of the trial of Joan of Arc in 1431. She would be found guilty and later executed in May of the same year.

Joan of Arc, a pious peasant in medieval France, believed that God had chosen her to lead France to victory in its long-running war with England. With no military training, Joan convinced crown prince Charles of Valois to allow her to lead a French army to the besieged city of Orléans, where they achieved a stunning victory. After seeing the prince crowned King Charles VII, Joan was captured by enemy forces, tried for witchcraft and burned at the stake at the age of 19. By the time she was canonized in 1920, Joan of Arc was considered one of history’s greatest martyrs, and the patron saint of France.
