Zygote Press was the site of a Get Out The Vote effort in support of Issue 55. The ballot measure calls for the continuation of the present cigarette tax in Cuyahoga County which supports funding for arts and culture. Several cultural institutions, including the Cleveland Museum of Art, smaller non-profit organizations and individual artists are the recipients of the revenues. It is vital that this funding continue. With your assistance, it will. Vote "Yes" on Issue 55.

Senator Sherrod Brown made a pit stop in Cleveland Heights this afternoon to mobilize volunteers for his campaign. He's encouraging folks to speak to at least 5 people, particularly undecided voter, to come the polls. The race against Bernie Moreno is tight. He says the work of those in the room with him will be crucial to get him re-elected.

Actor Michael Ealy dropped by Urban Kutz Barbershop today to visit owner Waverly Willis while stumping for Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown. Much of the dialogue between him and those who attended was about the presidential election, particularly concerns about Black men who support the Republican candidate. Ealy prodded those who bring up arguments about Harris's record to provide proof of the accusations. He sighted the recently announced plans to support Black men as proof it makes a difference. He also said that Democrats have not done of good job of communicating the benefits they have provided African Americans. He concluded by urging everyone to vote early.

Attended a most interesting lecture at Oberlin College today presented by Timothy D. Walker, a Detroiter who grew up in Dayton, Ohio but now lives in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He's edited a book called Sailing to Freedom: Maritime Dimensions of the Underground Railroad. Many who escaped to freedom did it by sea along the East Coast of the U.S. It was much less dangerous and greater distances could be covered.

His presentation is extremely informative about the involvement of African Americans in the abolitionist movement not only as freedom seekers, but as facilitators. They were heavily involved in maritime activities on the docks and on the ships, significantly numbered in the labor force, many as free men.

The maritime dimension is not widely discussed. Much of this information has recently come to light and is now under further study. There will be two more local lectures that I highly recommend. It will undoubtedly expand your perception of the movement and the history of this country in ways that defy the popular or conventional narrative.

Here are a number of the inductees into the R&B Hall of Fame at the ceremony on Sunday evening. Pictured from (l) to (r), Kenny Lattimore, Dale Edwards, Paula Brazil (accepting for Rose Marie McCoy), Marlyn Kauffman, Gene Chandler (previous inductee), Regina Belle, Jeffrey Osborne, Jae "Gospel Kid" Williams, and Ken Hawkins Jr (for Ken Hawkins, Sr.)

Ginuwine was not able to make it, but singer Blaq Rose paid tribute to him with his version of "Pony." Inductee Candi Staton sent a video acceptance speech.

Event organizer LaMont "Showboat" Robinson received high praise from many of the recipients. The R&B Hall of Fame is on the verge of a physical home in Cleveland's Buckeye community.

The Assembly for the Arts held its annual Public Officials recognition breakfast today at Rainey Institute. There was a plethora of elected officials present, including Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb who was invited to make some remarks by AFTA President/CEO Jeremy Johnson. The mayor spoke of the arts as a solution and encouraged support of issues 55 and 49, which respectively seek continuation of the cigarette tax to support the arts and tax levy support for Cleveland Municipal Schools.

Rhonda Brown, Chief Strategist for Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, was recognized for her work to advance the arts and the implementation of the Transformative Art Fund. It was mentioned that 200 Cleveland-area artists will be paid through the 7 projects funded with nearly $500-million.
