Tradition holds that Kūhaimoana, the largest and most celebrated of the shark gods, makes his home at Kaʻula in a large sea cave on the northwest side of island called Kahalauola. The cave is visible in the image.

It was said that Kūhaimoana was so huge that the channels between the Hawaiian Islands were too small for him to comfortably navigate, and so he preferred to spend his time in the deep ocean off Kaʻula.

With sea cliffs soaring over 500 feet high, and no place to land canoes, there were no permanent human settlements on Kaʻula Island. However, it was a wahi kūpuna known to the people, especially fisherman. There are two stone structures near the island’s summit, so it may have also been a place of worship.

In moʻolelo, Kaʻula was the seventh child of Papa and Wākea, the primordial ancestors of our people.

Tickets for our Winter showcase will go on sale next week! Join us as we present “Favorite Things” (cue music from “Sound of Music” 🎶) - celebrating the season with some of our favorite songs and hula from our first 10 years.

We would like to extend our appreciation to all of our friends and family for your ongoing support by offering this free show although we do appreciate any donation amount given. It was a beautiful weekend in Laguna Woods as our Kūpuna Team performed at this year’s Hula Hiehie O Nā Kūpuna! What a joy to showcase “Ka Nohona Pili Kai” by Keali’i Reichel and choreographed by our amazing Kumu Joydee!! ❤️🤙🏽🌺🍃 We were so blessed to have the loving help of our Kokua- Asha, Kristine and Ellen who kept things running so smoothly for all of us!! ʻEkolu = three ☘️☘️☘️ 3 days until you hear the ʻiliʻili of these young ambassadors of hula! ʻIliʻili are waterworn rocks used to tell the story of the hula dancer. Experience the work and rewards that hula offers you. New classes begin on July 16th for adults and July 21st for children. Watch us on June 22nd and join us for a new year!
