April 1959 - The Madera Tribune

COARSEGOLD. Committees and committee chairmen for the annual Coarsegold Rodeo will meet Wednesday to set final plans for the rodeo and dance. The annual affair is set for Sunday at the Coarsegold Rodeo Grounds. Dance is set for Saturday night at the Coarsegold Community Hall.

Committee chairmen will convene Wednesday at the hall to discuss final plans. Coarsegold area girls will participate in two contests Sunday, a barrel race and the rodeo queen contest. Mrs. Sandy Jones of Coarsegold is in charge of entries for the queen contest, barrel race, and roping and riding events.

Included in rodeo plans is a barbecue at noon at the barbecue pit above the rodeo arena. New features of the annual show will be a rebuilt arena and additional purse money for the amateur event. The arena has been designed and constructed by Coarsegold cattlemen, riders and ropers. The arena was rebuilt with the aid of volunteers. According to rodeo committee chairmen Murray Ward the arena will offer more safety and convenience for contestants. Chutes have been designed to enable slock and rulers to more | easily clear the gates. Chutes for the roping events have been relocated to give ropers room in which to work. Purse money has been increased to $127 for saddle bronc riding and $75 for each of the other events scheduled for the annual event.

Events scheduled for the rodeo are saddle bronc riding, Brahma bull riding, ba****ck riding, bulldogging, and calf and team roping. Rodeo queen, chosen from a field of Coarsegold girls under 21 years of age, will be announced Sunday prior to the opening event of the rodeo. Judging in the rodeo queen contest will be on the basis of horsemanship. Rodeo festivities will be well under way Saturday with the annual dance to be held at the Coarsegold Community Hall. The annual rodeo, one of the few in the area to include bull-dogging events, was not held last year due to heavy rains, but road Improvements and a generally drier year gave promise of a top-flight show this season. Coarsegold community women will be in charge of the dance and food sale booths at the rodeo grounds. Typical of the action seen Sunday at the annual Coarsegold Amateur Rodeo is this scene from the last rodeo, two years ago. Amateur rodeo performers from all parts of Madera County will participate in the rodeo.

Retired Madera County Sheriff, Edward Bates, wrote 'Tales of Western Cowboys & Lawmen' offering a variety of poems including 'The Coarsegold Rodeo'. He dedicated this poem to all 'cowboy and cowgirls of the Coarsegold Rodeo who would rather rodeo than do farming chores.' Sheriff Bates served our community from 1970-1980 and recently celebrated his 99th birthday!

We are reaching out to you with an exciting opportunity to contribute to our newest project. We are in the process of creating a museum at the Coarsegold Rodeo Grounds, dedicated to preserving the rich history and memories of this iconic location.

As the new owners, capturing and sharing the stories of those who have been a part of the Coarsegold Rodeo Grounds over the years is important to us. That's why we are reaching out to you, our community, in search of any artifacts, prints, history, or memorabilia that you may be willing to donate to our museum.

Whether it's old photos, posters, awards, news clippings, or any other items that tell the story of the Coarsegold Rodeo Grounds, we would be honored to add them to our museum-style memory wall. Your contributions will help us keep the memory and history of this special place alive for future generations to enjoy.

During the holidays, as you reconnect with family and friends, we encourage you to inquire if your parents, grandparents, or anyone else you know may have something they wish to have preserved in our museum. It could be a perfect opportunity to share and showcase these cherished items for all to see and admire.

If you have any items you would like to donate or if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. Your generosity will play a vital role in the success of our museum!

There are many ways to get the item(s) to us - by mail, local pick-up or drop-off at the Grounds. For inquiries, please e-mail [email protected].
