Thank you so much to the for helping deep clean the floor last week, and set up the Event Hall for a photo shoot this week. Now we can *really* promote the space for weddings! This Coburg nonprofit is incredibly thankful. 😊🙏

The second Monday in October is Indigenous Peoples' Day, honoring the people, tribes, and tribal nations of Turtle Island (North America) who are the original caretakers of this land.

Parker Learning Gardens is on Indigenous land, specifically the traditional homelands of the Kalapuya people, a diverse language group of 13+ tribes throughout the Willamette Valley who have been here since time immemorial. Parker Learning Gardens and the area surrounding us are at an intersection of territory for the Chafan, Tsankupi, and Chelamela Kalapuyans. Artifacts of these tribes are still found on the farm, most notably arrowheads. Due to our location in the flood plains and the presence of arrowheads, this place was likely used as part of the Kalapuyans' seasonal rounds to hunt, gather, and fish different foods based on seasonal abundance.

Even after experiencing devastating losses of lives, land, and culture from colonization, the Kalapuya people persevered. They are still thriving today as part of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians. These confederated tribes are two of nine federally recognized tribal nations in Oregon and 574 federally recognized tribal nations in the U.S.

Learn more & support Indigenous peoples in our region by:

- purchasing items from the Native American Arts & Crafts Market, first Sunday of the month, 10 am to 4 pm, 85 E. 8th Eugene - https://naacm.org
- learning phrases and words in Chinuk Wawa--a common trading language among tribes and settlers--using the Chinuk Wawa app
- taking care of the land by prioritizing biodiversity, ecosystem health, nutrient cycling, and more, recognizing the legacies of caretending practiced by Indigenous peoples to this day
