It was 58 years ago today back in 1965 that one hell of a strange trip began. . . , and Uncle Ken taught the band to play!
The first ever event called an ”Acid Test”... featuring a young rock band of misfits called The Warlocks, who a couple weeks later would change their name to the Grateful Dead. Held at Ken Babbs' house. This is most likely the only poster ever made for the event (hand drawn).
Maybe Ken Babbs might/could grace us with a comment or two about the event or handbill... 👌🏽

Along Montana’s Rocky Mountain Front where the prairie suddenly meets the rugged terrain of the Rockies - away from the lush, river bottoms, and forested slopes - fall brings on a less vibrant, yet still gorgeous tapestry of autumn tones. Pictured here is Haystack Butte, a prominent landmark near Augusta.

Two semi-nude figures, a male behind a female wearing what appears to be Egyptian headdresses are the central image here on BG Fillmore poster number #39. The female is looking back at the her male counterpart as he reaches out to touch her elbow. Both of them are consistently flesh toned however a color wheel was used in creating this "Poster From The Past" so that each the original first printings, handbills and cards were different. The reprints did not employ this technique and are all the same.

This terrific show took place 57 (Gee-Sus!!) years ago on back in 1966. The Jefferson Airplane ✈️, The James Cotton Blues Band 💙 and Moby Grape 🍇 performed for three nights of dance/concerts at The Fillmore Auditorium. This poster is the masterful work of the foremost rock artist Wes Wilson. It was printed a total of three times.

The Band played what they advertised as their "farewell concert appearance" on Nov. 25, 1976, which was Thanksgiving Day that year. The concert was held at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. It was to be known as "The Last Waltz." The Band was joined on stage by a few of their friends which included Bob Dylan, Paul Butterfield, Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, Ringo Starr, Ronnie Hawkins, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, Ronnie Wood, Neil Diamond, Bobby Charles, The Staple Singers, and Eric Clapton.

The event was filmed by director Martin Scorsese and made into a documentary of the same name, released in 1978. The film features concert performances, scenes shot on a studio soundstage and interviews by Scorsese with members of the Band. A triple-LP soundtrack recording was issued in 1978. The film was released on DVD in 2002 as was a four-CD box set of the concert and related studio recordings.

The Last Waltz is hailed as one of the greatest concert films ever made, would you agree?

Happy 47th Birthday to "The Last Waltz"!!
