This month, we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Harlan Tarbell (February 23, 1890 – June 16, 1960)—a magician, illustrator, and educator who revolutionized how magic is taught. While he may not have been the most famous performer of his time, his impact on magic education is unmatched.
Tarbell is best known for the Tarbell Course in Magic, a multi-volume series that has trained generations of magicians—including me! In a world without the internet, his course was like having a personal mentor guiding me through the art and psychology of magic. But what made his teachings truly stand out was how they applied beyond the tricks—he taught the power of presentation, storytelling, and showmanship.
His insights didn’t just shape how I perform magic; they also influenced how I approach marketing and business. Tarbell understood that magic is about captivating an audience, engaging their curiosity, and delivering an unforgettable experience—the same principles that make great marketing work today!
