The plant in the spotlight this Thanksgiving week is the carnivorous tropical pitcher plant (Nepenthes). These bizarre beauties appreciate bright, indirect light but can tolerate some shade. They enjoy consistently wet soil to mimic the rainforest environment they naturally are found in. However, some unique care is required in order for the plant to thrive. It is best to water with distilled water, as they collect nutrients from the bugs they attract and digest. It is recommended you fill your plant's pitchers--which function as a sort of stomach--with a very small amount of water to allow for best nutrient digestion.
