Can’t let today pass without getting someone very important “their flowers.”
My dad retired yesterday from his 40 year career in Journalism with The Associated Press.
Raised in the projects of the South Bronx his dream from a child was to be a journalist. He worked his way to attend Brooklynn Tech and earned a Scholarship to Fordham Univeristy. His dream was accomplishe when out of college he took a job with the Associated Press.
Covering major news stories such as The Challenger Tragedy, being in LA at the time of Biggies murder, Obama’s Inauguration, as well the Oscars, Grammys, Soul Train, and Image Awards. His coverage of Urban Entertainment for decades had him meet almost any celebrity you can think of - (w’ell never hear the end of him interviewing Beyonce) along with Musical heroes like Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and Earth Wind and Fire.
No matter what the secular accomplishment was however, they took a backseat to being there for his family. Never too busy to provide for us emotionally and spiritually in addition to what he did financially ensuring my mom could be at home with me and my brothers and hasn’t had to work in 30 years. He’s been a great husband of 41 years, and dad to my brothers and I and some of our friends too. And yes he’s the reason for my obsession of the Mets and Rangers and all things sports.
His biggest achievement has always been his family and always pushing us towards true happiness beyond what any college degree or job could offer - the reason why I found my way to being a florist. He’s example is a great one to work hard for your goals and dreams but never to forget what’s most important.
