Damea Bourne Benton grew up in a home her parents had restored and renovated in Columbia. Her parents have completed a number of home restorations since, as have Damea and her husband, Louis. The desire to revive old buildings and give them new life, coupled with generations of roots in Columbia make Chapel Lane both natural and unique. While driving down the road, Betty Bourne noticed the church building was falling further into decay. She called her daughter and son-in-law and asked them to come look at the building. After seeing the potential inside, Damea asked, “How can we not do something?”. The idea for Chapel Lane began to take shape.

Built in 1925, the Church at Chapel Lane was the original home of the Church of the Blessed Holy Trinity, the first Catholic church in Columbia. After the Holy Trinity Catholic Church relocated in the 1970s, the church building entered its second phase of life, first as a clubhouse and then as a commercial property housing first a florist and then a used book store before a residential renovation was planned but never completed.

Our Story

We are deeply rooted in the community of Columbia, Mississippi. It is our honor to revitalize and preserve its landmarks and the stories of its people and days gone by. Our greatest dream is to restore these beauties to their original state and allow people to enjoy their classic charm once again. Chapel Lane is much more than a cluster of buildings and outdoor spaces. It is a culture, a place for community, and a backdrop for memorable moments as authentic and unique as the venue itself. Built in 1925, the Church at Chapel Lane was the original home of the Church of the Blessed Holy Trinity, the first Catholic church in Columbia. The land for the church was purchased from Maude Dukate, whose family built several of the houses on Church Street, including the House at Chapel Lane.

The Church and House at Chapel Lane embody the simple elegance of the South. From the original hardwood floors inside to the ancient oak trees standing watch over the property, this is a venue steeped in charm and tradition and waiting to welcome you. After the Holy Trinity Catholic Church relocated in the 1970s, the church building entered its second phase of life, first as a clubhouse and then as a commercial property housing first a florist and then a used book store.

A residential renovation was planned but never completed. As this new phase of life for the Church begins, it is our hope that this restoration will once again allow the people of Columbia to gather together on Church Street and continue building the legacy of this landmark.
