Roses may be the most popular flower for Valentine's Day, but when you dive into the meanings of flowers, you'll learn that tulips are just as symbolic! They are often associated with love and romance symbolizing perfect and deep love making them the star of this week!
There are over 3,000 varieties of tulips which are divided into 15 groups, mostly based on the flower type, size, and blooming period. Some of these groups include single early, double early, trumpet, Darwin, hybrid, fringed, parrot, and fosteriana.
This week we're focusing on the unique Parrot Tulips! ๐ท It gets its name from its distinctive coloration and ruffled pedals, which resemble that of a parrots feathers. Parrot tulips are the result of natural mutations to single late tulips and trumpet tulips. They first appeared in the Netherlands in the 18th century. They were cherished by the few who could afford to grow them, as they were extremely expensive. Today, they are the most popular types of tulips and are grown all over the world.
Tulips are the 11th wedding anniversary flower and belong to the same family as lilies and onions!

As we enter into February, this week we are focusing on the beautiful Iris! Irises are one of February's birth flowers along with violets. ๐ชป
There are three main pedals symbolizing, valor, wisdom and faith.
In the Greek language, the word iris translates to rainbow. Many assume that the iris definition of rainbow refers to the many colors the flower comes in, but the root of the meaning traces to Greek mythology. The flower was a representation of the goddess of the rainbow, who was known as the messenger of Zeus and Hera. She carried messages from heaven to Earth on the arc of the rainbow, and was a companion to female souls on the way to heaven. ๐
The beauty of irises also inspired many artists. One of the most noble works on irises is Van Gogh's, "Irises". In this piece, he carefully studied the flowers to capture their unique twists and curving lines. Some art historians suggest that the irises may have held personal symbolism for him, representing hope and resurrection.
Irises are also the 25th wedding anniversary flower as well as the state flower of Tennessee!

Did you know, the scientific name for carnations is Dianthus Caryophyllus!? ๐ธ
Dianthus (common name carnations) are popular flowering plants in the family, Caryophyllaceae. There are over 300 species of annuals, biennials, and perennials of Dianthus. Carnations were admired and adored by the ancient Romans in Greeks, who first cultivated these flowers over 2,000 years ago.
Carnations are a beautiful symbol of love, devotion, passion, commitment, distinction, fascination, and a mother's undying love. As with most flowers, each color represents something unique.
There are three main varieties of carnations:
๐ธ Standard or Large Flowered: The most common variety. They produce big, showy blooms on long stems.
๐ต๏ธ Spray or Miniature: this variety grows up to six flowers on a single stem. They are compact with bushy petals.
๐ผ Dwarf or Midi: They have smaller flowers and shorter stems when compared to the large flowered carnations. They can feature a single flower or multiple blooms depending on the variety.
Striped (variegated) carnations, typically symbolize rejection or refusal. In the language of flowers, each color or pattern carries a specific meaning, and striped carnations are often associated with the idea of saying "no" or expressing regret.

๐ธ โจ Let's kick off this new Floriography series!! In January, we will explore the beauty of the CARNATION flower. Carnations, being the birth month flower of January, take the spotlight as the perfect bloom for this month. They hold the position of the second most popular flower globally, following closely behind the rose. ๐น
In the Victorian era, flowers played a significant role in conveying emotions and messages that were sometimes difficult to express openly. Carnations, in particular, were valued for their symbolism and we're often used in various social and romantic contexts. Different flowers and colors were assigned specific meanings, allowing people to convey sentiments discreetly. Carnations became associated with certain meanings, and the color of the carnation carried additional nuances.
In the Victorian era dating apps weren't around so lovers had to send sneaky messages to one another with flowers. A coated message would be sent then the other person would respond with a carnation flower. A solid color flower meant yes but a yellow carnation meant no.
Commonly associated meanings are:
โค๏ธ Red - Love, admiration, deep affection
๐ค White - pure love, innocence, good luck
๐ฉท Pink - gratitude, appreciation, admiration
๐ Yellow - disappointment, rejection, disdain (in some contexts), but can also symbolize joy and happiness
๐ Purple - capriciousness, unpredictability, whimsical
If you're not a fan of carnations, we aim to change that for you this month! Stay tuned for more insights on this wonderful bloom! ๐ธ๐ต๏ธ
