🔗Watch the video linked below to see Fawn Weaver share her story about how she founded Uncle Nearest to honor Nearest Green, the formerly enslaved distiller who taught Jack Daniel. In seven years, her Black-owned liquor brand grew to be worth $1.1 billion placing her at No. 68 on Forbes' Richest Self-Made Women list. Knowing that many former slaves' stories, like Green's, were forgotten, Weaver aimed to correct Green's exclusion from Jack Daniel's history. The first Uncle Nearest whiskey, named 1856 for the year Green perfected charcoal filtration, debuted in 2017 and has won over 1,000 awards. About Uncle Nearest:
Nathan "Nearest" Green, known as Uncle Nearest, was the first African-American master distiller. In the mid-1850s, he taught a young Jack Daniel the art of distilling, including the sugar maple charcoal filtering process that defines Tennessee whiskey. Nearest's expertise was crucial to Jack Daniel's success. After the Civil War, Jack appointed Nearest as his first master distiller. Although Nearest's contributions were forgotten for many years, he is now recognized for his significant impact on the whiskey industry.
