August 26th - September 1st Offerings

Water has never tasted so sweet. The blue of the sky feels hot and heavy, the flowers droop dramatically, pining for rain, fall is so close and so far away. Don’t rush your life away, I remind myself. So I allow a bead of sweat to trace the inside of my elbow, sit quiet with the bees sleeping in celosia, invite the goldfinches to feast on my sunflowers, steep herbs in water and sunshine and pour it all over ice.

This planet grows hotter every year and still produces our favorite foods. How much does the earth love us? Ask the maple tree that’s lived longer than you. Put your sunburnt, impatient ear to the earth and let the soil tell you the truth. There, in the dirt, in the dark, the truth is simple. Nothing is wasted, only composted, and good soil is cleaner than anything we buy in a bottle.

Roots wait for rain, holding each other through the drought.

I’ve let it run wild; cage-free tomatoes hide,
Trellis-less pumpkins meander,
Yarrow seedlings spring like founts of healing
Upon every sparse spot of earth.

I could get lost in here. I find myself here.
We have everything we need here.

Message to order!

Week of July 29th

Sometimes time slips like gelatine, like pasta after rinsing, like an armful of sun warmed tomatoes, tumbling one after the other.

Damp rises from the earth as fog and I wade beneath the cloud, keep my eyes on the ground, pick up the bumblebee that’s slipped into stillness overnight.

Late July means everything blooming, raucous with color, heavy with fruit. This elder bee slept last night under the tall celosia stalks, having done what it was born to do all its life.

I wasn’t born to cook or to eat—I was born to tell stories. I came to be, tiny and yellow and wriggling, fighting for this breath, refusing to go back to sleep. The tales of survival pulse through my blood. Time has pulled me under the current, tumbling through salt water, and light has lifted me back up to breathe, to sow another seed, to check another pot of potatoes softening, to watch my father till clay soil as his father tilled sandy soil, to listen to the stories shared around a dining table, or picnic blanket. Time slows as we eat.

Week of July 22nd:

The magic of sunshine after summer downpour sparkles in my periphery. Basil blossoms leave their oil on my fingertips; a carpenter bee follows my slow steps between marigold and sunflower and meandering squash vine; dahlias nod in recognition as i toss soil upon their tubers.

Cucumber cools the radish heat, both vyying for attention with their audible crunch.

Inhale: sweet marjoram and sharp oregano.
Exhale: peach nectar and cool mint.

I search for faeries as if I’m a child again, looking in the ferns, under borage bushes, around tiny celosia flower clusters. I’m just another growing being here.
