I would like to remind you of the regularly scheduled membership meeting of the VFW Post 5290 this Thursday at 6:30 pm. This meeting is a very important because we are electing the officers of the 2022-2023 term.

Your vote counts and it can only count if you attend the meeting. No absentee voting allowed. For your information and awareness, the minutes of the April meeting and Quartermaster’s report has been loaded to the website, www.VFW5290.org.

What’s important about the minutes of the meeting, the nominations of officers for which you can vote are noted there. So please come vote!!!!

Congress is voting now on the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2022. There are two critical amendments that NEED to stay!

GWOT Memorial Location Act

With the recent end to the conflict in Afghanistan and the 20th commemoration of the attacks on 9/11, NOW is the time to formally honor the more than 2.7 million men and women who served in the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT). Washington bureaucrats are prohibiting a GWOT Memorial on the National Mall. The VFW strongly believes that our veterans, their families, and survivors have more than earned their right to have a place to commemorate alongside the other memorials of previous generations. Congress is failing the post-9/11 veterans who fought to defend our freedom and way of life.

Major Richard Star Act

Scores of disabled combat veterans are being DENIED full access to their hard-earned benefits. Over 48,000 medically retired veterans, most of whom are Purple Heart recipients, are forbidden from receiving full retirement pay, a benefit for which they sacrificed their health and military careers. The VFW firmly believes that DOD retirement pay, and VA disability compensation are fundamentally different benefits, earned for different reasons. Congress has failed to acknowledge this inequity and needs to fix this injustice now.

The VFW demands that Congress pass both the GWOT Memorial Location Act and the Major Richard Star Act as amendments to the NDAA for 2022.

TAKE ACTION

Congress is voting on these amendments NOW, so you must contact your members TODAY! Tell them to keep the Global War on Terrorism Memorial Location Act and the Major Richard Star Act as amendments in the NDAA for 2022. Now is the time to honor GWOT veterans and provide Purple Heart recipients the benefits they earned and deserve!

Tonight is Bingo at the VFW (Reminder - 1432 VFW Dr., SW, Conyers, GA 30012 (off Exit 80 of I-20, West Avenue, in Conyers, GA).

We have early bird or 50/50 starting at 6:30 p.m. and regular Bingo at 7:30 p.m.

A family environment which includes popcorn, chips, fries, hot dogs, mozzarella sticks, and hot dogs for purchase along with soft drinks, water and coffee.

Also, we need volunteers to help make our Bingo a success. Please consider volunteering and/or coming to play. We have safe distancing available. Masks are requested if you are not vaccinated for your safety and are optional if you are vaccinated.
