Ok, February babies - this is for you! Do you identify with any of these flowers?
I love Bearded Iris, even though it isn't the best cut flower as it fades quickly in the vase, but the smell of a bearded iris and those metallic sheens they have on their petals are mesmerzing!

How gorgeous is this peony? It's called Etched Salmon. A fairly new to me variety that I haven't been able to harvest from yet, but I'm hoping this is the year. I always buy roots with 3-5 eyes minimum and I wait a few years for the peony to mature before I harvest, only harvesting 1/3 from each plant. Peonies are a practice of patience but sooooo worth it!

Waking up Ranunculus corms today! I'm growing salmon, pastel, and picotee this year. Salmon is my favorite!! Ranunculus corms look like dried up little octopus and then you soak them for 3-4 hours they plump right up. Then I put them in trays of soil to presprout before I move them outside.

During the January "Get to Know Your Farmer" series, I shared some information about myself and how I started my farm. Today, I want to take you back to my roots. Although I was born in New Jersey, we moved to Upstate New York when I was young. My parents always dreamt of owning a farm and wanted a bigger piece of land. They built a log cabin and a barn on a property outside of Smyrna, NY, and named it Misty Meadows Farm. I continued their farming legacy by using their name for my own farm. As you can see from these photos, my sister and I grew up surrounded by a variety of farm animals, including rabbits, chickens, turkeys, pigs, cows, horses, ponies, sheep, and many other animals people would leave on our road. At one point, we had six dogs: three Irish Wolfhounds, a beagle (stray), a poodle (stray), and a terrier that we adopted from a humane society in New Jersey, as well as five cats. As a teenager, I used to drive my parents crazy by bringing home stray kittens that I would find on the side of the road after babysitting. I couldn't resist their little eyes shining in the dark. Unfortunately, many people think that a rural farm road is the perfect place to leave their unwanted animals, but my parents always made space for them, and I was lucky enough to have new pets. I was quite shy growing up, so I enjoyed playing outside by myself or with animals. Even now, I still like spending time outside by myself, which is perfect for the hours I spend working on my flower farm!

Super fun graphic on repurposing a jug for sowing seedlings - hope you enjoy it!

Reminds me of a story one of my coworkers shared about gardening as a kid - their mom would save milk jugs all winter long and use them to cover the tomato plants in the spring. Then you could be fancy and call them a cloche! πŸ˜‰

January’s birth flower is the Carnation!

The carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus) is often referred to as the β€œflower of the gods.” It grew in the wild on the hillsides of Greece and is said to have been named by Greek botanist Theophrastus. The carnation was used in garlands, art, and decor in ancient Greece and Roman times.

At one time, the carnation was used to treat fevers in Europe and was used to spice wine and ale; it was a substitute for the more expensive clove in the Elizabethan era. An essential oil can be extracted from a carnation’s flower and used for aromatherapy and perfumes. It is traditionally prescribed in European herbal medicine to treat coronary and nervous disorders.

In early times, carnations were predominantly pale pink and peach, but over the years, the availability of colors has grown to include red, yellow, white, orange, purple, and green, as well as bi-colors and frosted varieties. Different colored carnations convey different meanings - for example light red signifies admiration and striped represents regret.

Border/garden carnations grow 1 to 2 1/2 feet tall with flowers growing from wiry stiff stems. Perpetual flowering carnations grow to 3 feet and produce larger flowers. Carnations can also be grown as an annual. They prefer cooler summer climates and moist, well-drained, gritty soils high in organic matter.

πŸ’ Did you know that Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service -- to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities? Citizenship involves taking an active role in improving communities. What are you doing for others? How do you give back to your community? shares "We don't have to reach for the starsβ€”but it is incumbent upon each of us to take the small and necessary steps toward equality. When we are united in moving forward, we cannot be defeated. Our journey to the promised land is generational and long term."

Dr. King acknowledged and fought for systemic change. His example is our call to action.

Hi Flower Friends! πŸ‘‹ Continuing my β€œGet to Know your Farmer" series from last weekend, I wanted to remind you of my previous post from last Saturday. In that post, I introduced myself. In case you missed it, you can go back and check it out.
🌻This weekend, I would like to share with you how and why I started my farm. I have always been an environmentalist and fond of spending time outdoors- gardening, studying herbalism, hiking and foraging. However, it wasn't until I went through a relationship ending, and as my kids grew older and more self-reliant, that I decided the time had come to switch careers.
🌻Having grown up on a farm, I had some knowledge about the growing part of farming, but the business and marketing aspect of it was, and still is, quite daunting. I knew that there were many great vegetable farmers and herbalists in the area, but I wanted to stand out by providing organic farm-to-table local flowers!
🌻In 2015 I began building the groundwork for the business, adding lots of perennial plantings into the landscaping and slowly adding more and more annual planting beds to the farm. Slow and steady wins the race right?
🌻Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, I was able to complete all the necessary paperwork to officially establish myself as a New York-based business. I decided to name my farm Misty Meadows Flower Farm as a tribute to my parents, who owned a farm called Misty Meadows Farm when they moved from New Jersey to New York.
🌻Stay tuned next weekend to dive deeper into β€œMy Roots” and I have lots of cute farm photos from the 1980’s to share with you!
