On Super Bowl Sunday, January 9, Music in Corrales featured two "super" musicians in an unusual but delightful pairing of instruments: Cuban-American Tommy Mesa (cello) and Argentinian J. P. Jofre (bandoleon). Their program featured a mix of classical standards (two Bach cello suites and Saint-Saëns’ “The Swan”) and melodic and moving duet and solo pieces composed by Jofre himself, Astor Piazzolla, and two young composers, Andrea Casarrubios and Lydia Jane Pugh.

On Sunday afternoon January 12, the New York Brass Arts Trio brought their bright brass sounds to the Old San Ysidro Church with an amazing range of musical selections. Their program included pieces composed by Bach, Beethoven, Bartok, Piazzolla, Gershwin, Ravel, Joplin, and contemporary composers Gina Gille and Ivette Herryman Rodriguez. Of note, French horn player Blair Hamrick is a University of New Mexico alumna. Many in the audience played with her or remembered her from her days as a Lobo!

Bright and early the following morning, the Trio gave master classes to band students at Cibola High School and the Corrales International School as part of our Music in Schools program. Thank you New York Brass Arts Trio for bringing your music and experience to our local schoolchildren.

On Wednesday night, December 18, in the Old San Ysidro Church, decorated in its holiday finest (thanks to the Corrales Historical Society), pianist Aldo Lopez-Gavilan took the audience on a personal musical journey through his compositions and arrangements, which reflected the spirit, rhythms, and total colors of a wide range of cultures from Cuba to West Africa to Europe and the United States. He introduced each piece with comments about the origins and character of the music that enhanced the audience's appreciation. Thank you Aldo for helping us ring in the holiday season with your incredible performance.

Last night, Stephanie Bettman and Luke Halpin performed for a sold-out audience at the Old San Ysidro Church with foot-stomping bluegrass, heartwarming songs about personal journeys, and a few standards from the Great American Songbook. Their moving lyrics, incredible harmonies, and extraordinary instrumentals thrilled and delighted the crowd!

Music in Corrales also honored Liz Torres, the longtime guitar instructor at Taylor Middle School. She conducted the advanced guitar students for the last time at the beginning of the Rooster Blackspur concert. The students played a moving arrangement of the National Anthem plus two other delightful pieces and received a standing ovation from the crowd. Thank you, Liz, for your commitment to these young musicians and for sharing the joy of learning to play an instrument with these young musicians.

Rooster Blackspur and her band captivated the Music in Corrales audience last night at the Alfredo Garcia Barn in Los Ranchos. Her soul-stirring singing, songwriting, and energy had the crowd cheering and dancing. Thank you Rooster for giving us such an incredible evening of music before your new adventure begins in Nashville!

The Alejandro Brittes Trio charmed the crowd at La Entrada Park last Saturday with traditional Chamame melodies from the lowlands of South America. Chamame has been declared an Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Its music embodies the ritual musicality of the indigenous Guarani people with the Baroque style brought from Europe by missionaries in northeastern Argentina, southern Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

Everyone had a wonderful time last evening at the FREE family concert in La Entrada Park, co-sponsored by Music in Corrales and Corrales MainStreet. The New Horizons Band of Rio Rancho had everyone cheering and singing along to Disney favorites and big band stylings. Over 400 people; kids, parents, grandparents and couples, enjoyed visiting with friends, neighbors and family while listening to the music under the shade of the cottonwoods.
