As a wedding photographer, my heart is to serve my couples with the goal of increasing joy and decreasing stress every step of the way—especially on your wedding day. One of the biggest ways to create a calm, meaningful, and joyful experience is by carefully considering how and when you see each other for the first time.
I used to be neutral on the idea of a “first look,” but after over a decade of photographing weddings, I have come to truly believe in the many benefits it offers. A first look provides a private, intimate moment to soak in the excitement together before the whirlwind of the day begins. It allows for a chance to calm each other’s nerves, and, logistically, it helps create a smoother, more relaxed timeline. Couples who choose a first look often get more portraits together, enjoy a stress-free transition into their ceremony, and ultimately have more time to be fully present with their guests.
That said, above all else, my goal is always to serve each couple in a way that best honors their unique love story. If a first look isn’t for you, I highly recommend a “first touch” or a moment of prayer together before your ceremony. This allows you to connect, exchange a few heartfelt words, laugh together and maybe shed some happy tears together without seeing each other beforehand. A first touch can be incredibly and beautifully emotional, providing a sense of calm and reassurance while still preserving the tradition of seeing each other for the first time at the altar.
I love that Emily and Greg chose to do a “first touch” and pray together before their ceremony! It was so sweet and an honor to capture these sincere and sentimental moments. (It’s hard to believe this was almost a year ago and that they will be celebrating their first wedding anniversary in just a few days!)
Whether you choose a first look, a first touch, or another meaningful moment, I’m here to help guide you in creating a wedding day experience that is joyful, stress-free, and deeply personal to you. 🤍
