Get your dancin’ shoes on because this Thursday we’ll be getting down to the groovy R&B and Motown sounds of APO (All-Purpose Orchestra).

APO has been lighting up parties in Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy for over 15 years now. We’ll be making space on the dance floor and firing up the disco ball for the occasion. We’re thrilled to host them!

Victor Washington - Keyboard, Vocals
Darrel Ward - Drums
Tyrone Cox - Trumpet, Vocals
Mandie Rains - Lead Vocals
Walter Banks - Bass, Vocals

Thanks to our special hosts for the evening: .j.kim

Two live shows this Thursday! And live music EVERY Thursday 🙂

You regulars will recognize John Lander from our Open Jams as the guy who can play masterfully on every instrument in the house. He is bringing his own band this time!

Elysse is a Brooklyn-based vocalist and composer who crafts cinematic, genre-bending songs.

As a vocalist featured in numerous musical groups, she has held jazz residencies weekly at Minton’s Playhouse and monthly at Soho Ludlow House, and has frequently performed at esteemed venues all over NYC, including The Blue Note, Small’s Jazz Club, Joe’s Pub, The New York Historical Society, Webster Hall, and National Sawdust.

As a songwriter, Elysse writes and performs music under her solo project Elysse. Elysse discovered her penchant for songwriting while pursuing an MA in Cultural Studies at NYU, taking cues from such artistic influences as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Stevie Wonder, and Joni Mitchell to cultivate a panoramic yet intimate style spanning a vast spectrum of idioms from psychedelic soul to chamber pop, all anchored in her passion for poetics and the written word. She released The Preludes EP in March 2021 and is poised to release new music in 2022.

Homemade Harira Soup prepared and offered by the generosity of El Ateeq

A few weeks ago, our neighbor and friend El-Ateeq mentioned that he is in touch with the directors of a non-profit global youth peace organization and that they would be coming to NY to give presentations about the program and raise funds. As we approach the new year, it seems like perfect timing to give the stage to voices of a possible new future, one in which conflict, hatred and stereotypes are replaced with respect and friendship.

The organization "Kids4peace" was born out of the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in East Jerusalem. It's one of the most tense and controversial places in the world and has become the face of the dispute between Israelis and Palestinians. As a response to this violent divide, a group of parents on both sides decided that the key for a better future is for their kids to know each other and dream together a different reality.

"In the face of violence, hatred and injustice, we connect youth from across religious and social divides and give them tools to be agents of change. Our vision is to create a global movement of peace leaders and activists who transform divided societies into communities of lasting peace."

We opened up the storefront windows! To help keep the musicians warm, well ventilated and to see how far we can stretch this season. Jay Rodriguez and M***a Flower at “Capture the Movement” photo exhibit were up for the experiment.
We learned the tragic news that Jay played today for one of his mentors, Bassam Saba, who died from COVID yesterday.

Bassam Saba of Lebanon is a world-renowned virtuoso, multi-instrumentalist, and leading figure of Arabic music. Please do check him out.

The music is bittersweet, as we mourn the loss of such incredible figures to the virus. Thank you Jay and all the musicians who came today. What a special moment.

Stay safe and see you tomorrow (1-5pm) for the final day of the exhibit and an amazing lineup of artists. Excellent work putting this together Shawn!
And thank you to all the photographers!

The rain didn’t stop us, at least not for the first 45 minutes. Was beautiful to see people not budging under their umbrellas. Every event seems to bring some new surprise: “the Sawman”, 89 years old, who lives around the corner.

Thank you and for bringing a spirit that made us not only joyful, but proud to be living here in Brooklyn, in this thing together. Carving spaces that we want to see and be a part of.
