Today my dad inaugurated as a USA Citizen. Its a bittersweet feeling bc we love our home of Mexico (Durango) but even with all the chaos in the country, my dad purpose of coming here as a child under the age of 10 has been fulfilled. He provided the best he could for my siblings and I. We were rich in memories, love and support even though it took some of us (me) longer to realize that we had it when my dad never did growing up. We never once experienced the darkness he did in his childhood and today many years later he’s finally a citizen. Im so grateful for a lot of things but today the fear of the unknown is not existent. Knowing both my parents are safe and sound near me is truly a humbling experience. This is the story of a first generation Mexican American. My parents came to this country undocumented for their own well being. They didn’t come here to be the “bad hombres,” they came because they were DREAMERS.
