A sneak peek at next month's book club!

Monthly Book Club: The Teller of Small Fortunes
Wednesday, December 17 | 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM
Zoom | Registration Required

Join Skidompha librarians for a relaxed conversation about our monthly book selection! For October, we will be reading Julie Leong's The Teller of Small Fortunes. All discussions occur over Zoom, so please email [email protected] to register.

Tao is an immigrant fortune teller, traveling between villages with just her trusty mule for company. She only tells “small” fortunes: whether it will hail next week; which boy the barmaid will kiss; when the cow will calve. She knows from bitter experience that big fortunes come with big consequences…

Even if it’s a lonely life, it’s better than the one she left behind. But a small fortune unexpectedly becomes something more when a (semi) reformed thief and an ex-mercenary recruit her into their desperate search for a lost child. Soon, they’re joined by a baker with a “knead” for adventure, and—of course—a slightly magical cat.

Tao starts down a new path with companions as big-hearted as her fortunes are small. But as she lowers her walls, the shadows of her past close in—and she’ll have to decide whether to risk everything to preserve the family she never thought she could have.

Next week!

Gyotaku, Japanese Fish Printing
Tuesday November 25 | 1:00pm – 2:00pm
Ages 6-11 | Porter Hall

Developed in the 1800s, Gyotaku is an art form that is rumored to have originated with a practical purpose: Japanese fishermen who were in competition would cover the side of their catch in ink and make a print. While these prints can still be seen hanging in tackle shops around Japan, the practice has morphed into a celebrated art form.

We won’t be using real fish (we don’t like wasting food!) but instead have purchase lifelike models made for this purpose.

No registration is needed; this is a drop-in program.

Few places have been as nostalgized, or as maligned, as malls. Since their birth in the 1950s, they have loomed large as temples of commerce, the agora of the suburbs. In their prime, they proved a powerful draw for creative thinkers such as Joan Didion, Ray Bradbury, and George Romero, who understood the mall's appeal as both critics and consumers. Yet today, amid the aftershocks of financial crises and a global pandemic, as well as the rise of online retail, the dystopian husk of an abandoned shopping center has become one of our era's defining images. Conventional wisdom holds that the mall is dead. But what was the mall, really? And have rumors of its demise been greatly exaggerated?

Finding Our Voices Book Club: Roddy Doyle
Tuesday, November 18 | 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Porter Hall | Skidompha Library

Skidompha is pleased to be a partner library for the Finding Our Voices Book Club! We will be livestreaming a conversation with author Roddy Doyle. He will be joining us from Ireland for a discussion over Zoom of his brilliant trilogy on Paula Spencer, starting with The Women Who Walked Into Doors, then to Paula Spencer, and right up to this year's The Women Behind the Door. His first book was earth shattering, and the latest book is a devastating and spot-on examination of domestic abuse's impact to the mother and daughter relationship.

This series of author talks is organized by the group Finding Our Voices, and focuses on how writers deal with the themes of domestic abuse in their work. As such, the conversation may be difficult for some participants; if you would prefer to join the livestream from home, please use this link to sign up: https://bookclubs.com/finding-our-voices/join These events are free and open to all.

We hope you can join us for a discussion with this renowned author!
