Our recent Bourbon Tasting and Dinner pairing event was an exquisitely curated experience. We created a masculine and refined ambiance design featuring wood tables, black leather chairs, and wood plate charger rentals from our friends We chose to use delicate glassware and lush florals for an elegant contrast.

Thoughtful touches like dehydrated orange slices, wood pens, and bourbon tasting trivia cards atop each charger added a personalized element. Black and gray striped napkins perfectly accented the refined rustic aesthetic.

A featured highlight was the expert mixology from .616 . Their professional mixologist provided tasting notes and crafted artisanal cocktails to complement each premium bourbon selection on the tasting menu.

To say it was a huge success is an understatement. This was definitely one for the books and high on our list of favorite events planned to date!

Hello, and Happy Tuesday, friends!

I’m taking a moment to (re) introduce myself. I’m Mari, the DOF (Director of Fun) and the heart and soul behind my small business, MODERNDAYPICNIC and event design.

My event planning/hospitality career began 23 years ago when I landed a gig producing Trade Shows for the Food and Restaurant industries. Since then I’ve produced all types of events from corporate meetings, to weddings, celebrations of life and everything in between, you name it I’ve done it!

Fun facts:

I love being social but I don’t like social media. I’m a face to face kind of girl.

I enjoy hosting dinner 🍽️ for family and friends.

I can create a meal by rummaging through the fridge and pantry. Voila!

I tweak baking recipes. (Is this really possible, isn’t baking an exact science?) 😉

My favorite drink of choice is a spicy Margarita (bring on the Mezcal!) 🌶️

When I’m not working, I’m having fun; equally, when I’m having fun, I’m working. 😜

My greatest accomplishment thus far has been starting my small business. If you don’t start, you don’t start, and you don’t learn.

I’m tenacious and resourceful.

My favorite place to be is in nature amongst trees. 🌲

My greatest supporter is my rockstar 🤘🏼husband; he’s the flippin’ greatest!

“L” I S F O R L O V E. I had the pleasure of designing this Boho-themed engagement for Ale & Julian. Julian contacted me about doing the proposal in either Laguna or Newport Beach; he was very specific about what he wanted for his special day with Ale. I was quite impressed with Julian and his ability to articulate his vision for the perfect proposal. Newport Beach was special because he spent time there during his college days. I immediately took a drive to scout a location, taking the coast all the way up. After some consideration, I chose “L” Street for a number of reasons; one, there was good opportunity for a number of photo backdrops and two, because “L” stood for “love.” During my call with Julian I asked him to tell me a little about Ale; he indicated that she was a true gem, kind, sweet, shy, gentle and that she worked with children. Julian expressed that he loved her so much. I sensed with all my being that what Julian was sharing was undoubtedly true. Taking what he shared into consideration, I suggested a morning proposal, forgetting that I’d have to be up in the wee hours to make it all happen, but that didn’t matter, I was willing to do anything to ensure this would be a very special day. I’m grateful that Julian chose and trusted me to design and orchestrate the perfect proposal. The love Julian and Ale have for one another is undeniable and I felt so honored to have witnessed their proposal, which was almost ruined by a couple who were walking in front of Ale and Julian, loudly talking about getting married as they approached the picnic setup; I was nervously shushing the lady and turning up the music so that Ale wouldn’t hear her.
