The Norton Center for the Arts is home to Centre Collegeโs annual Norton Center performing arts season of professional touring presentations. It is also the primary venue on campus for music and theatrical productions, lectures and other convocations and live student entertainment. The Norton Center has two venues: the 1,470-seat Newlin Hall, known for its acoustics, and the warm and intimate 367-
seat Weisiger Theatre. The Norton Center also boasts a large art collection with many of the works on display in the Grand Foyer and throughout campus.
The Second City comedians Max Thomas and Chas Lilly took time out of their busy touring schedule last week to host two workshops for our Centre College and GSP students on the basics of improv.
Through hilarious group exercises and games, students explored impulse & spontaneity, listening, being present in the moment, taking risks and other basic building blocks of improvisation, all in a supportive environment meant to build trust in oneself and learn to fail joyfully.

Did you know... the two festival founders worked together at the Norton Center?
๐บ ๐๐ข๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ข๐๐๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐จ is one of America's top trumpet performers and teachers. He retired from Centre College in 2012 as Matton Professor of Music Emeritus, and has dazzled audiences worldwide as a soloist and with artists such as Henry Mancini, Doc Severinsen, Pearl Bailey, Dizzy Gillespie, and Dave Brubeck.
๐ผ ๐๐๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐ ๐
๐จ๐ซ๐๐ฆ๐๐ง, a renowned musicologist and conductor, served as the Norton Center's second Executive Director from 1983-2009. He founded the Advocate Brass Band and served as its conductor for twenty years, performing more than 150 live concerts and releasing six CDs of historic American band music.
The spark for the GABBF ignited during a shared car ride to a postcard show. While on the hunt for old band photos, Vince and George brainstormed the idea of a brass band festival. George pitched the idea to the Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce, and it seemed to strike a chord...
What resulted from that shared car ride? Over 30 years of the world's best brass musicians performing in Danville for an annual weekend of free family fun, community and connection.

In 2004, the Centre Student Activities Council (SAC) wanted to bring a musical act to Carnival bigger than any they'd had before. Their mission was accomplished when they booked a date on Ben Folds' solo tour, and he performed for a packed Newlin Hall on May 7, 2004.
โLanding the biggest act in SAC history this year is tremendous," said then-SAC President Chris Fleming to the Advocate-Messenger. "Having Ben Folds here demonstrates how SAC is really listening to the students."
