What an honor it was to have the 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist Kerri Strug in the building today as the special guest speaker for United Way of Baldwin County, Alabama’s Campaign Kick Off Luncheon! Kerri Strug of course is best known for performing the vault at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and perfectly sticking the landing, despite having severely injured her ankle. Her vault cinched the first ever gold medal for the U.S. women’s gymnastics team, beating the Russian team who were favored to win the gold, if Strug had not given a flawless performance. Kerri spoke eloquently about persistence, mental toughness to follow through, and being our best selves. It was a privilege having the legendary Kerri Strug in the City of Daphne, Alabama - "The Jubilee City"! 🇺🇸

Please note that work on the turn lane located at US Hwy 98 southbound and Van Avenue (in front of Terry Thompson) will begin tomorrow, June 12, 2024. The turn lane will be shortened significantly allowing only a couple of cars at a time. Lanes will be marked with traffic cones, but please use caution when driving in this area.

Congratulations to our very own John Williams! The O-G! John can tell you anything you need to know about the history of the Daphne Civic Center, as he is quite literally one of the original staff when the Civic Center opened 24 years ago. It goes without saying that he can also tell you (without missing a beat) the exact measurements of any given space within the building, the full capacity of that space, fire code requirements and any specifics down to the core. It’s no surprise that John is a leader who has a wealth of knowledge and experience when it comes to events and serving our great community! Thank you John for all that you have done and continue to do!

⭐ Meet John Williams!

John is currently the Manager at our Daphne Civic Center. Twenty-four years ago, John volunteered to help at the Civic Center and was hired instead as the Audio-Visual Manager. Originally born in New York City, John moved to Daphne with his family as a child and still lives in the same house his grandfather built in 1942. He has fond childhood memories of visiting the Big Top and Cinema close to today’s Daphne Civic Center location.

As the Civic Center Manager, John is responsible for the complex dynamics of maintaining the Daphne Civic Center and ensuring the smooth coordination of diverse events hosted by the community. No one in the City knows the Civic Center building and its history as well as John and he enjoys the many projects required to keep the facility at its best. His favorite part about working for the City of Daphne is the opportunity to work with the many citizens who utilize the Civic Center and the various events within its walls. He loves that no two days are the same! From Elvis concerts, ice skating, Mardi Gras balls, dance recitals, weddings, and wrestling camps, John is committed to making the Civic Center a venue that represents the best of the City of Daphne.

Outside of work, John enjoys studying the Bible, watching his grandchildren play sports, and putting together Legos with his grandchildren. Since the pandemic, he has focused on a healthier lifestyle but Champy’s Fried Chicken and Buster’s Brick Oven are still some of his favorite restaurants. John loves to power walk along Main Street and exercise at the Daphne Senior Center or Daphne Planet Fitness. He has been married 34 years to his beautiful wife, Iris, has three wonderful daughters, and 5 adorable grandchildren. Fun fact about John – in his youth, he was a professional wrestler and has the championship belts to prove it! He is also a proud graduate of the 2024 Leadership Baldwin County class.
