Good luck to all of the wrestlers competing in the state wrestling tournament in Columbus, Ohio this weekend, especially the Northwest Ohio wrestlers. Special good luck wishes to our very own Class 3 Officials wrestling in the tournament this weekend - Aiden Helmke and Corbin Kimmel!

Our 2nd local rules meeting will be held at Defiance High School Monday night, 11/20 at 7:30. Anyone interested in becoming a licensed official is welcome to attend. Ohio is facing a severe shortage of wrestling officials, especially with the increase in female wrestling events. Visit https://www.ohsaa.org/Officiating/permits/category1 to register for a class. Females with a background in wrestling (wrestlers, former wrestlers, mat stats, managers, parents, etc,...) are encouraged to become licensed officials.

It’s with a heavy heart that I am posting news of the passing of a fellow official and friend. Tim Gilmore was a father/husband, wrestler, coach, official and friend to many. Tim officiated many state tournaments over his 30+ year career and mentored many other officials , including myself. Tim’s photography skills even caught me working my first state tournament finals match, which I have framed in my den. Tim will be greatly missed in the Ohio wrestling community!

There is a new officiating class starting on March 24. To enroll:

1) go to myOHSAA.org;
2) create an account (if you are still a HS student, I suggest that you don’t use a school email address, but you can change it later if that’s all you have);
3) In the left hand column under “Officiating Courses” select the drop down menu “Select a Course”
4) On the right will be “Select a Sport” - Choose Wrestling and then scroll down to find Butch Blankenship’s course. Enroll in that course ASAP so that you get your class material within a few days.
All of the book work is online. This class will have the opportunity to get mat experience at the Wrestle Against Autism tournament at Otterbein University in Westerville on April 16th.

If you are interested in becoming a licensed wrestling official, the process just got easier. All of the class work is offered online and

Set up your account as soon as you can so their books and information will arrive quickly. A new class will begin January 22, but there are others set up as well. The sooner you can take the classes and pass, the more opportunities for you to work Youth tournaments this Spring to improve your mechanics.

If you are interested in becoming a licensed wrestling official follow the link to OHSAA.org - the OHSAA in conjunction with the OWOA, has developed an online curriculum to become a licensed official. After you have passed the coursework we will pair you up with a mentor.

The first step is to create an account at myOHSAA.org, then click on “Officiating Courses” -> “Select a Course” and choose Wrestling from the “Sport” drop down menu. Choose one of the classes that meets your time schedule and you are set to go. You can PM me with any questions.

Several people have expressed frustration in the registration process for the upcoming class. If you have been unable to complete the registration for Monday's class, just show up next Monday (1/17) at 6:00 and we will get you registered. The class fee will be required, but I can almost GUARANTEE that your class fee and first year OHSAA dues will be paid for by the events you officiate this Spring (probably the first tourney you work while still in the class!).
