Naming and sitting with our negative emotions helps us become mindful and aware of our internal experiences. You may notice yourself resisting difficult emotions and the bodily sensations that accompany them—pushing them away and feeling ashamed of them. Or perhaps you find yourself getting pulled into them—replaying an argument, or reliving feelings of rage or embarrassment.
Instead of turning away from pain and uncomfortable feelings in avoidance we can learn to gently turn towards what we’re experiencing. We can bring a caring open attention towards the wounded parts of ourselves and make wise choices about how to respond to ourselves and to the world around us.
