“Last week we were treated to a wonderful workshop with guest instructor Arthur Williams AIFD EMC, conceptual floral artist and owner of Babylon Floral, as well as a member of our chapter. Participants made original arrangements based on the theme Unconventional: Trash to Art”.
Playing more with incorporating “trash” into floral art, creating with what’s available and using unorthodox materials to create design elements that may be missing with fresh materials.

A conversation amongst Dryads, Nature is always a witness to mankind’s tragedy……will be on exhibit for the next few weeks and will be evolving as flowers fade and new elements spring forth. This is our 20th Valentine’s Day and we look forward tospreading romance and making everyone’s Valentine’s week special.

We’ve been planning, ordering and piling up vases for months. We go from a staff of 3 to a small army of friends to make the big day happen.

This year the shop will be open on Sunday February 11th for walk-ins and phone orders, no deliveries. Regular delivery schedule the rest of the week. We encourage everyone to order early and we love it when orders are spread out Monday through Wednesday so we can survive the holiday!

My demo piece for my last class at Mixed Media to 3-D Floral Art
An Unorthodox Approach to Interpretive Floral Design
August 13, 2022 - 10 am–2 pm
Overview

Pulling inspiration from the DAM's collections, we'll first be creating collages interpreting artworks by form and color as 2-D maps. The next step will be using wire, middollino and yarn to create flexible armatures as bases to add our fresh materials to. Third, we'll be using our collages as a map of placement, form and line in our finished floral designs.

This one-day workshop will be a very freeform knowledge sharing experience, suitable to beginners or advanced floral designers. The approach is very out of the box, breaking down an existing artwork into shapes and colors, then recreating a mixed media 3-D version with fresh floral elements. We'll go over flower care and handling, mechanics and various applicable philosophies of floral design.

Behind the scenes, notes and the mock-up. I’m notorious for my ridiculous sketches, so tiny mock-ups is key to communicate with fabricators.
SACRED GEOMETRY ASCRIBES SYMBOLIC AND SACRED MEANINGS TO GEOMETRIC SHAPES AND PROPORTIONS. IT IS ASSOCIATED WITH THE BELIEF THAT A GOD IS THE GEOMETER OF THE WORLD.
THE POINT OF SHIVA & SHAKTI – The Soul
The dot represents the soul, the formless divine within us. Without the point no circle (symbol of universe) can not be drawn and no square (symbol of culture) constructed. Just as the existence of the circle presupposes the existence of the central point, the existence of the world presupposes the existence of a witness of the world – the soul (‘Atma’).
THE CIRCLE OF BRAHMA & SARASWATI – The Universe
The circle (the most spontaneous of natural shapes) the best represents the Hindu universe, because Hindus see the world as being timeless, cyclical and infinite. The universe is the medium through which the divine presents itself. It is window to the divine.
THE SQUARE OF VISHNU & LAKSHMI – The Culture
The square (with its sharp edges, the most artificial of shapes), when drawn within the circle of the universe, it best represents culture. Different cultures have different values, hence the square of cultures can be oriented in various ways, but always anchored to the rim of the circle at its corners. All cultures, however diffrent, depend on nature for their survival.
vastu-purusha-mandala
A Hindu temple design follows a geometrical design called vastu-purusha- mandala. The name is a composite Sanskrit word with three of the most important components of the plan. Mandala means circle, Purusha is universal essence at the core of Hindu tradition, while Vastu means the dwelling structure.

My piece for the opening of AIFD’s 2022 Symposium Roots. Titled “Altar” draws inspiration from the climate crisis, the need to create sustainable works that reflect the microcosm/macrocosm of our world. Destruction and renewal, the beauty inherent in destruction. The pomegranate is a symbol stolen from the myth of Persephone, a scenario of a broken cycle, a loss of seasons, an end to the patterns of our world, loss unimaginable. A world we’re rapidly creating for ourselves.
The structure itself is inspired by Hindu temple structure design.

Thank you for giving me a platform where my voice could be heard and for being at the forefront of education in the floral world.
